When the government wrongfully convicts a defendant, it has a responsibility to do everything
within its power to make that person whole. The government cannot make
up for the years an exonerated person spent wrongfully imprisoned, but a
pardon is certainly within a governor’s power. It is therefore mind
boggling that the man presidential hopeful Donald Trump tapped to be his
vice president, Mike Pence, has been blocking an innocent man’s pardon
for two years.
Keith Cooper was wrongfully convicted of armed robbery and attempted
murder. Although Cooper is out of jail, he still has a record that can’t
be cleared unless Gov. Mike Pence agrees to pardon him. For the past
two years, Pence has refused to do so.
“I’m tired of people judging me by that conviction. That [Department of Correction] number. That’s not who I am,” Cooper told BuzzFeed. “Man, I know that better than my own Social Security number.”
