The Killing of Atatiana Jefferson: National Day of Action to Be Held in Fifteen Cities

Until Freedom, founded by Tamika D. Mallory, Linda Sarsour, Mysonne Linen and Angelo Pinto, will lead a national day of action on October 28 in fifteen cities across the United States to honor the life of Atatiana Jefferson, a young Black woman in Fort Worth, Texas, who was just 28-years-old when she was shot and killed by a Fort Worth Police officer in her own home.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. (EST), people across the country will stand in solidarity and demand justice for Atatiana and all Black women whose lives have been taken due to police abuse. Everyone is being asked to wear black on as a sign of unity.

In New York City, Until Freedom’s co-founders will lead the rally at Foley Square in partnership with Arc of Justice, Justice League NYC and other leading activists, advocates, elected officials, faith and community leaders, artists and more.

“It is absolutely outrageous to consider that less than one week after Officer Amber Guyger was found guilty of murdering Botham Jean in his home in Dallas, that another Texas police officer could fire with impunity into the home of another innocent Black person,” says Tamika D. Mallory, adding “We demand answers, but more importantly, we demand change. We will not allow Black people to continue to be preyed upon by those committed to protecting and serving them.’

The family of Atatiana Jefferson said the following about the Day of Outrage, "Our family is mourning over the tragic and untimely murder of Atatiana by Aaron Dean former Fort Worth police officer. Although Dean, has been arrested and charged, he is back on the streets and we are uncertain justice will prevail. We demand full transparency and accountability. It is our sincere hope that Atatiana’s story will not be forgotten, and our pursuit of dignity prevents the likelihood of similar events of police abuse. Please show up for the Day of Outrage wherever you are. Keep our loved one’s name alive!"

Cities that have confirmed their participation include New York, Fort Worth, Houston, Seattle, Atlanta, Phoenix, Jackson, Knoxville, Las Vegas, Raleigh, Miami, Fayetteville Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Detroit, Shreveport, Springfield, Dayton, Newark, and Charlotte.

'Harlem Roots' Exhibit to Open at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building

Will Showcase New York State Harlem Art
Collection for the First Time in More Than 20 Years

A new exhibit, "Harlem Roots," will open later this month in the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building, marking the return of the New York State Harlem Art Collection to the public for the first time since the mid-1990s. The exhibit features select pieces from a collection by artists who have made significant contributions within their communities and the art world at-large. These artists helped elevate what was coined "community art" to what is now considered some of the finest American art created in the 20th century by predominantly Black and Latino artists working in New York City. More information on the exhibit can be found here.

"Recognizing Harlem for its rich cultural history and the influence artists and their art have in this vibrant community, New York State is pleased to return the Harlem Art Collection to its public place at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building," Governor Cuomo said. "This exhibit celebrates the artists whose work helped elevate New York as a beacon of the art world and will serve as a tribute to their incredible contributions to the art community at-large."

"We are proud of our rich culture and diversity in New York, and this new exhibit will highlight the great work of 20th century Black and Latino artists," said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. "The 'Harlem Roots' artwork will celebrate our community strengths and promote inclusiveness among all New Yorkers. I encourage residents and visitors to visit the exhibit and see it firsthand at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building in New York City."

The "Harlem Roots" exhibit will be unveiled at a preview reception open to the public on October 30 in the Powell Building's second-floor Art Gallery and Community Room. Beginning November 15, the free exhibit will be on view to the public from noon to 7 p.m. each Friday. The building is located at 163 West 125th Street.

The New York State Harlem Art Collection was conceived in 1976 to draw the public's attention to art that celebrated the contributions of the Harlem art community. Then Senator H. Carl McCall established a Harlem State Office Building Committee on Arts and Culture in 1975, which included State and City leaders, as well as representatives of the Harlem business community.

Stacey Abrams Headlines Invest In Brooklyn Dinner

Puts Spotlight on 2020 Census and Grassroots Leaders

BROOKLYN, NY - Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate and founder of Fair Count, Stacey Abrams headlined Brooklyn Community Foundation’s annual Invest In Brooklyn Dinner— a benefit for the organization’s racial and social justice work that took place at the Weylin on Friday, October 18th. Founded in 2009, the Foundation has distributed nearly $50M to community-based organizations across the borough, making it the largest social justice funder for Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Community Foundation President and CEO Cecilia Clarke welcomed guests and discussed the shared vision and impact between the Foundation and Fair Count, the nonprofit Abrams launched earlier this year to get out the count for Census 2020 in Georgia.

Ms. Clarke began by saying, “We are so honored to be joined by one of the most exciting and influential leaders fighting for our country’s future: Stacey Abrams.” She went on to say, “Ten years ago, Brooklyn had the lowest mail return rate on the Census in the country, and was the hardest-to-count county in all of New York State. As the largest county in New York, this makes Brooklyn ground zero for getting out the count in 2020.” Ms. Clarke highlighted the work the Foundation has led to ensure a fair count. “We have become a leading census advocate, pushing the city and state to secure more than $60M for Census outreach driven by community-based organizations.”

NY Times bestselling author and former Teen Vogue Editor-In-Chief, Elaine Welteroth moderated a fireside chat with Ms. Abrams where they discussed the importance of the 2020 Census as well as issues surrounding electoral justice and voting rights. When Ms. Welteroth noted in her introduction that Ms. Abrams was “the first Black woman nominated for the governorship of Georgia,” Ms. Abrams interrupted her. “The first Black woman to be nominated for the governorship by a major party in American history,” before going on to tell the cheering audience, “No - y’all should not clap for that. It’s been 242 years.”

When Ms. Abrams was asked, “What is the connection between your work on the Census and your work on voting rights? Where do you find the through line?” she said, “the Census is the most urgent issue of 2020...it is as urgent as the presidency.” She went on to say that “taking the Census seriously, believing that it is a question of our survival, is essential because if we lose the count, we not only lose political power, we lose resources. $800 billion dollars will be allocated and if it does not come to the communities that need it the most, it will harm those communities not for a decade, but for a generation. If we erase people from the narrative of who we are, we erase them from the future of our country.”

One of the evening’s many highlights was when Ms. Abrams discussed the resistance she faced while running for Governor in 2018. Abrams said  “ignore them all.” She went on to say, “I am a sturdy Black woman with natural hair and no husband and I did a damn good job in my election,” for which she received a standing ovation.

The evening concluded with Brooklyn Community Foundation’s newest board member Aisha Moodie-Mills, a political strategist, CNN Analyst and former Victory Fund CEO, reiterating the Foundation’s impact in Brooklyn. She said Brooklyn Community Foundation “is doing the work of saving lives on a day-to-day basis in the borough. Around the country people are hiding in churches because the Trump White House is trying to hunt them out, send them off and take away their children. The investments you make today save lives and seed social and racial justice work across the borough.”

Eight Days of Early Voting in New York Begins on Saturday, October 26

Governor Andrew Cuomo today reminded New Yorkers that early voting will begin on Saturday, October 26 for the November 5, 2019 general election. The eight days of early voting will make voting more convenient for voters whose professional or family obligations make it difficult to physically get to the polls, as well as reduce waiting times and ease logistical burdens for poll workers. A central component of Governor Cuomo's 2019 Justice Agenda, this measure was signed into law by the Governor on January 24, 2019. This will be the first election in New York State with a period of early voting. New York voters can find their polling place here.

"Too many generations of New Yorkers have been discouraged from exercising their right to vote, and this year we enacted a series of new measures to fix that and help bring our voting laws into the 21st century," Governor Cuomo said. "Early voting is just one of the many steps we've taken to break down barriers to democracy, and I encourage New Yorkers to take advantage of this opportunity to skip the lines on Election Day and ensure their voices are heard at the ballot box."

On January 24, 2019, Governor Cuomo signed a comprehensive package of reforms to modernize New York's voting laws, including synchronizing federal and state elections to ensure that voters only go to the polls once to choose their nominees; allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote; and enacting universal transfer of voter registrations. These historic new laws were a key component of the Governor's 2019 Justice Agenda and were signed within the first 100 days of the 2019 legislative session.

Battling Addiction in NY: New Recovery Center Opens in Capital Region

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) today announced the opening of a new Recovery Center in Albany, operated by Second Chance Opportunities. The center provides free addiction services and support for people and their families who have been affected by addiction. OASAS is providing $350,000 to support operation of this facility. This money is part of the federal State Opioid Response Grant funding awarded to New York State.

“We are committed to investing in new recovery centers across the state to help ensure individuals and families struggling with addiction have the care and support they need,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, Co-Chair of the NYS Heroin and Opioid Task Force. “The opening of the Second Chance Opportunities Recovery Center in Albany will provide free addiction services and long-term care with dedicated staff, peers, and volunteers. The center will also house job training and workforce development programs, with Second Chance Opportunities providing employment opportunities for individuals. We still have more work to do, but recovery centers like these are helping to save lives and advance our efforts to combat the crisis once and for all.”

“Recovery centers are an important part of the addiction care that is available here in New York, and thanks to Governor Cuomo’s work to expand these services, more New Yorkers are able to access critical support designed to enhance their long-term recovery,” OASAS Commissioner Arlene González-Sánchez said. “This new center will further expand the availability of these important services here in the Capital Region, and support our ongoing efforts to bring nation-leading addiction care to people in every region of New York State.”

Recovery centers are designed to promote long-term recovery with professional staff, peers, and volunteers, who provide multiple services to engage and support people in recovery. The Second Chance Opportunities Recovery Center will provide job training and skill development workshops, recovery support sessions, and substance-free recreational activities. Additionally, Second Chance Opportunities operates a cleaning company that offers employment opportunities for their clients.

The Second Chance Opportunities Recovery Center is located at 55 Colvin Ave, Albany NY 12206.

Senator Neil Breslin said, "The new Second Chance Opportunities in Albany will help families all across the Capital Region who are affected by addiction. The free services and support that are provided at recovery centers are critical to the success of an individuals efforts in battling addiction.  I applaud The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services for efforts in this important fight."

DFS to Investigate Deed Fraud and Deceptive Practices Targeting Homeowners in Brooklyn

Governor Andrew Cuomo has called on the New York State Department of Financial Services to launch an investigation after a troubling report described instances of apparent deed fraud and deceptive practices targeted at homeowners in Brooklyn. The Governor also directed DFS to dispatch the Department's Foreclosure Relief Unit to provide assistance to homeowners who believe they may have been a victim of deed fraud or unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices in regard to the sale or attempted purchase of their home. Finally, the Governor urged affected homeowners to call the DFS foreclosure relief hotline - 1-800-342-3736 - for assistance.

"The illegal and deceptive actions to rob New Yorkers of their homes reported today are disgraceful and must be stopped," Governor Cuomo said. "I am calling on the state Department of Financial Services to investigate these transactions and the entities behind this deceptive behavior, and to deploy foreclosure relief services to affected communities so we can start helping impacted homeowners now. Anyone found guilty of this repugnant behavior will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

"The conduct described in this article is reprehensible and has no place in New York State. The Department of Financial Services will use every available resource to investigate and hold accountable any individuals and entities that engaged in deceptive and illegal practices to deprive New Yorkers of their homes," Department of Financial Services Superintendent Linda A. Lacewell said. "In response to Governor Cuomo's call for an investigation and steps to provide relief to homeowners, DFS is dispatching our team of foreclosure specialists to hear first-hand from those who may be victimized by deed fraud and other deceptive actions, and today is launching an investigation to ensure the State of New York holds any actors responsible for wrongdoing and victims get the restitution they deserve."

In August, Governor Cuomo signed legislation enhancing consumer protection measures and closing loopholes to prevent deed fraud and mortgage scams. The new law (A.5615/S.1688) provides better protections for homeowners whose homes are either in default or in foreclosure, increasing the likelihood that a victim will have the opportunity to seek recovery in court.

The Department of Financial Services' Foreclosure Relief Unit is a statewide program to assist New York homeowners already in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure. Homeowners who believe they may have been a victim of deed fraud or unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices in regard to the sale or attempted purchase of their home, may call the Foreclosure Relief Hotline at: 1-800-342-3736, or click here for more information or to file a complaint.

The Foreclosure Relief Unit: provides information on available federal programs; answers inquiries about the foreclosure process; assists homeowners in their efforts to obtain loan modifications and other relief; and takes complaints from aggrieved homeowners and seek resolutions with banks and mortgage servicers.

Widows, Widowers of Police Officers and Firefighters Killed in the Line-of-Duty Receive Cost of Living Increase

Governor Andrew Cuomo today signed legislation (S.3168-A/A.4079-B) increasing special accidental death benefits for spouses and children of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. Specifically, the new law increases cost of living benefits by 3 percent for the deceased's spouse or the deceased's children under the age of 18 or, if a student, under the age of 23. This legislation goes into effect immediately.

"Police and firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty are mothers, fathers, husbands and wives - and the family members they leave behind must be properly cared for," Governor Cuomo said. "With this measure, we continue to honor these brave first responders and better help ensure their families get the support and the benefits they deserve."

Senator Andrew Gounardes said, "When a police officer or firefighter dies in the line of duty, we must do all we can to support their loved ones left behind. I would like to thank Governor Cuomo for signing my bill to provide a cost of living increase in for widows and widowers who would not receive adequate benefits otherwise. This benefit will ensure their families sacrifice is not forgotten."

Assemblymember Latoya Joyner said, "The families of those who have lost their loved ones in the line-of-duty should not be left alone to pick up the pieces. Just as their spouse or parent served with honor and dignity, it is our duty to serve them in their time of grief. I thank Governor Cuomo for signing this legislation to increase these death benefits, providing families with financial stability."

Daniel Pantaleo Receives Standing Ovation at PBA Meeting

Pantaleo was terminated by NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill several weeks ago.

Officer Says He Was Scrutinized by Colleagues for Refusing to Stand

By Gary Glennell Toms

A member of the New York Police Department's Police Benevolent Association recently spoke with From The G-Man and expressed outrage over an incident that occurred during the organization's October 8, 2019, meeting at Antun's, which is located in Queens Village, New York.

According to the officer, Daniel Pantaleo, who was recently terminated by Commissioner James O'Neill for using an illegal chokehold that led to the death of Eric Garner in 2014, made an appearance and received a standing ovation. "The minute he appeared, nearly every PBA member jumped up and loudly applauded for a good two minutes," said the officer. "The man was treated as though he was a hero and did nothing wrong, but the fact of the matter is he violated NYPD procedure and played a significant role in the death of an unarmed man. That's not just my assessment. That's the assessment of Commissioner O'Neill and the judge who recommended that Pantaleo be fired," the officer stated.

The officer also claimed that Pantaleo appeared to play the victim while addressing those in attendance. "He told us he and his family have fallen on hard times and thanked the PBA's top five and the PBA body for their support," the officer said.

The officer alleged that when he remained seated during the salute to Pantaleo, fellow officers stared at him in disapproval and disgust. "The majority of them looked at me sideways, and I really didn't give a fuck," said the officer. "I've been on the job a long time, and I'm regarded as a cop's cop by many. But a lot of people also know that I stand for what's right and don't support bullshit in any form."

The officer went on to note that Garner's death is a tragedy for all involved and that Commissioner O'Neill made the right call in terminating Pantaleo. "I fully support the commissioner's decision, and any cop that looks at the video of the takedown and says Pantaleo did nothing wrong, they're being disingenuous and they're lying to themselves and the public," proclaimed the officer. "Pantaleo's actions set off an unfortunate chain of events that caused a man to lose his life. We take an oath to protect and serve the public, and a man is dead because of Pantaleo's recklessness. I won't stand for that, and I mean that figuratively and literally."

From The G-Man is attempting to obtain footage or a photo of the incident. If successful, it will be published on the site.
