President Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday that he had
"total" confidence in Attorney General Jeff Sessions amid calls from
some lawmakers that Sessions recuse himself or even resign from the Justice Department.
When pressed on whether Sessions should recuse
himself from investigating alleged ties between Trump's surrogates and
intermediaries for the Russian government, the president said, "I don't
think so."
A senior administration official told NBC News
that the White House learned about Sessions' contact during the 2016
campaign with a Russian ambassador from a reporter on Wednesday night
prior to a story published in the Washington Post. That meeting was
confirmed by a Sessions spokesperson as something done in his capacity
as a senator at the time.
