NEW YORK - The number of hate groups in the United States has been
rising for three years, according the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The group found 917 hate groups in 2016, up from 892 in 2015 and 784 in 2014, according to the group's 2017 annual report.
There are currently 47 known hate groups operating out of New York, up from 44 in 2015 and 2014, the group reported.
The center, headquartered in Montgomery, AL., works to promote
equality and fight hate and bigotry through legal means, education and
advocacy, according to its website. It was founded in 1971 by two civil rights lawyers .
The center's Hate Map, updated annually, works to document the rise of hate groups in the U.S., according to its website.
