Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn is still weighing whether to run for
mayor in 2017, after House Democrats made only modest gains last week
with Donald Trump at the top of the ticket.
“My inclination remains to remain in Washington and not run away from
the crisis that has fallen upon the capital city," Jeffries told
POLITICO New York in a phone interview. "However, all options are on the
table and I am going to take a hard look at where I can make a
difference in the next few years.”
Democrats flipped a handful of House seats, but fell well short of
early projections that Democrats could win upwards of 20 seats — and
perhaps even regain control of the chamber — as a result of Trump's
presence at the top of the Republican ticket. The disappointing result
means Democrats — including Jeffries — could be relegated to the
minority for the foreseeable future.
