Councilman Ritchie Torres, the youngest member of the City Council
and considered by some to be a rising star in the Democratic party, is
running to become the council’s next speaker.
Well, sort of.
Torres’ candidacy comes with a caveat: He’s pledging allegiance to
the Bronx County Democratic Organization and the council's Bronx
delegation even if, in the end, they choose not to support him.
“I am a candidate for speaker, but more important than my candidacy
is my commitment to the Bronx,” Torres told POLITICO New York. “I’m
deeply committed to the Bronx and the Bronx council delegation and we,
as a delegation, have agreed to be a unified force in the speaker’s race
so I will support whomever the Bronx delegation decides to support.”
Torres’ decision to run adds a new dynamic to the already crowded
field of candidates, which currently includes Council members Mark
Levine, Corey Johnson, Donovan Richards, Robert Cornegy, Jumaane
Williams, Jimmy Van Bramer and Ydanis Rodriguez.
