'From The G-Man' Columnist, 80, Competing in Major Triathlon

Dr. Steve Jonas, a Professor Emeritus of Preventive Medicine at the of Stony Brook University (NY) School of Medicine, is in the midst of his 35th season of multi-sport racing. He has taken part in 255 duathlons and triathlons, ranging from sprints to the Ironman competition.

“My primary goal in each race has always been to finish happy and healthy. Fortunately, I’ve been able to do that. I’m having as much fun racing now as I ever have,” said Jonas.

“I recently competed in the USA Triathlon Sprint Triathlon Nationals at Omaha, finishing fourth in my age group and qualifying for the Worlds next year in Australia!  On August 19, I’m racing in the International Triathlon Union's Age-Group Sprint Duathlon World Championships in Penticton, British Columbia.”

Competing in the age group of 80-84, which is presently diminishing in size, he has qualified nine times as a member of USA-Triathlon’s Team-USA for the Triathlon Age-Group World Championships and twice for the Duathlon Age-Group World Championships.

Dr. Jonas is the author of Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals: And Doingthe Duathlon Too (New York: WW Norton), the first book for beginners and recreational athletes in the sport. The book was originally published in 1986 and is available through its 20th anniversary second edition. He also wrote The Essential Triathlete (New York: Lyons and Burford, 1996, now Globe-Pequot/Lyons Press, Guilford, CT), and a host of other books on the subject.

Since February of 2017, he has been a regular columnist for Gorunbikerun, a webmagazine devoted exclusively to duathlon. (https://gorunbikerun.wordpress.com).

Many of his previously published articles and columns on tri/duathlon and health-promotion and exercise are accessible through his website: http://ordinarymortals.net/.

Dr. Jonas’ The Duopoly Watch has been showcased on From The G-Man since 2015, and it has become one of the site’s most popular columns.
