SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- New York insurers would be required to provide men
with free vasectomies under a proposed law being considered by state
lawmakers.
The bill, passed by the Assembly Monday, would continue insurance
coverage of cost-free birth control in the event the federal Affordable
Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is repealed.
Obamacare requires insurers to provide no-copay coverage of 18 FDA-approved methods of birth control for women only.
The New York bill would go one step further by requiring insurers to
also cover men's contraceptive methods, including vasectomies.
A vasectomy is a permanent method of birth control. A vasectomy
prevents the release of sperm, which fertilizes eggs. The procedure can
cost up to $1,000, according to Planned Parenthood.
The New York bill also would require coverage of emergency contraception and a year's worth of birth control.
