Senator Sanders Launches and Expands Free Legal Assistance Program for Seniors

Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, D-Far Rockaway) today launched a new program offering free legal services for senior citizens age 60 and older at his District Office in South Ozone Park. The program is conducted in partnership with Queens Legal Services for the Elderly, a part of the Jewish Association Serving the Aging (JASA).

“Seniors are a vital part of this community and I am committed to providing them with the services they need, close to home,” Sanders said. “Our elders should not be burdened with legal issues because they can’t afford help or can’t travel to receive help, so I am proud to partner with Queens Legal Services for the Elderly and JASA to bring free legal services to our seniors.”

Due to the overwhelming demand for services, Senator Sanders will continue to host the program on the first Monday of every month from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at his District Office at 142-01 Rockaway Boulevard, South Ozone Park, NY.

“We at JASA thank Senator Sanders for the opportunity to partner with his office to provide these vital legal services to Queens seniors, allowing them to remain independently and with dignity in their homes and community,” stated Donna Dougherty, Attorney-in-Charge of JASA/Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens.

Those interested in receiving help must make an appointment by calling 718-523-3069.  Assistance is available relating to eviction prevention, housing rights, foreclosure prevention, property fraud, elder abuse, estate planning, predatory lending, social security, SSI, and Medicare and Medicaid eligibility.

Senator Sanders also currently offers free legal assistance for veterans on the first Thursday of every month at his District Office. Those interested in that program can make an appointment by calling the aforementioned number.
