Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Talks to Glenn Greenwald About the Democratic Party and 2018 Midterms

House candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez talks to Glenn Greenwald about the need for Democratic Party reform, her views on immigration and criminal justice reform, her approach to “identity politics,” why she has taken such unusually blunt positions on Israel and Palestine, and the challenges of running against a machine boss politician.

Her Democratic opponent, Rep. Joseph Crowley, has been in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1999. It has been 14 years since Crowley has faced a primary challenge, thus receiving the Democratic Party nomination automatically every two years since 2004.

Crowley has become the classic New York machine boss, having obtained both his 1990s seat on the New York City Council and his seat in Congress through a combination of dynastic politics and machine favors. But for the people of the 14th Congressional District that Crowley represents — which covers parts of Queens and the Bronx and is 70 percent nonwhite — it means they have had no Democratic Party alternative in this Democratic safe district for more than a decade.

All of that changed this year as a result of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose primary challenge against Crowley has sparked substantial excitement within her district and, then, media attention throughout the country.

Can a 28-year-old Democratic Socialist pull of one of the rarest feats in U.S. politics: beating an entrenched incumbent in a Democratic Party primary?

Trailblazers in Black History: Donyale Luna

Largely forgotten today, Donyale Luna was one of the first women to carve the aesthetic space into which today's non-white models exist. There has never been a better time in history to be a Black model. Naomi Campbell is worth a reported £30 million, and the Puerto Rican-born Joan Smalls - a face of Estée Lauder - is the number-one model in the world this year, according to models.com. Yet until the advent of the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s the fashion industry operated its own kind of apartheid, which entirely excluded non-white models from its magazines, advertising and catwalk shows.

Donyale Luna was the first Black model who really began to change things; to enable more diverse beauty paradigms to break through. Aptly, perhaps, she was discovered on a Detroit street in the same year as the Civil Rights Act, which prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin.

Sinclair Broadcasting, Not Fox News, is Becoming the Truest Heir to Roger Ailes' Conservative News Legacy

For those worried about the rise of propaganda in America, this is a troubling development.

By Nicole Hemmer

This April, a reporter for a Sinclair-owned TV station revealed that she was fired for refusing to add conservative talking-points to a climate change story. This followed weeks of controversy, including revelations that the media giant had forced local news anchors to read identical scripts denouncing, in Trump-like fashion, “fake” news.

More recently, in a speech this May, Hillary Clinton specifically called out Sinclair (alongside Fox News) for "delivering propaganda."

Sinclair Broadcasting Group, the largest owner of local television stations in America, is still not a household name like, for example, Fox News. Yet it may be the truest heir to former Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes’s original vision of conservative news programming.

Ukrainian-Americans, Global Community Asked to Participate in One-Day Hunger Strike in Support of Oleh Sentsov

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the largest representation of 1.5 million Americans of Ukrainian descent, calls upon the Ukrainian-American community, and our friends around the world, to express their solidarity with Oleh Sentsov by participating in a one-day hunger strike this Wednesday, June 13, on the eve of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.  This act of political protest follows on UCCA’s June 1 letter to President Trump and Congressional leaders calling attention to Mr. Sentsov, and the over 60 Ukrainian political prisoners who languish in Russian prisons.

An award-winning film director and a Ukrainian native of Crimea, Oleh Sentsov is currently imprisoned in Siberia. On May 14, he declared an indefinite hunger strike, stating that “the one and only condition for its termination is the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners that are currently present on the territory of the Russian Federation.” In no uncertain terms, Oleh Sentsov has declared that if he dies during the World Cup “he would be happy for having drawn attention to Ukrainian political prisoners.”

To amplify Sentsov’s message beyond his prison cell, UCCA has chosen June 13 for a solidarity hunger strike because it is on the eve of the FIFA World Cup, the world’s second largest sporting event, which is being held this year in Russia. UCCA President Andriy Futey stated that “UCCA strongly believes that it is morally reprehensible that an international sporting event designed to promote international goodwill and harmony will be held in a country that continues to blatantly disregard basic human rights and the rule of law.”

UCCA calls for the United States to support the immediate release of Oleh Sentsov and the over sixty other Ukrainian political prisoners currently held by Russia by utilizing the Magnitsky Act and CAATSA, as passed by Congress in December 2012 and July 2017, respectively, and implement additional sanctions against Russian officials.

UCCA urges all those who wish to participate in this one-day hunger strike on June 13 to share their activism with others through social media, using the following hashtags:

#SaveOlegSentsov

Father Killed Himself After Separation from Family at US Border

A Honduran father separated from his wife and child suffered a breakdown at a Texas jail and took his own in a padded cell last month, according to Border Patrol agents and an incident report filed by sheriff's deputies.

The death of Marco Antonio Muñoz, 39, has not been publicly disclosed by the Department of Homeland Security and did not appear in any local news accounts.

But according to a copy of a sheriff's department report obtained by The Washington Post, Mr Muñoz was found on the floor of his cell on 13 May in a pool of blood with an item of clothing twisted around his neck.

Starr County sheriff's deputies recorded the incident as a "suicide in custody."

On the Brink of Fascism in the US: The Role of the Ruling Class, Part 2

I began Part 1 of this two part series by noting that the legal and political walls are closing around Trump. In just the week since the publication of that column, the ring has closed even moreso. As an indicator of that state of affairs, Team Trump has taken to making ever wilder claims, such as his second most prominent mouthpiece after Sean Hannity, Rudy Giuliani, claiming that Mueller and his staff are out to frame Trump. (For what, they don't bother to tell us. But one must suppose that it is some crime for which Trump could employ his claimed right to pardon himself --- pardons, of course, being granted only to convicted criminals.) Giuliani has once again illustrated one of the first principles of litigation one learns when one goes to law school: "If you don't have the facts, argue the law. If you don't have the law, argue the facts. If you have neither the law nor the facts, argue ad hominem."

As the ring tightens --- and given the indictments and guilty pleas already obtained, it would seem to be based on more than a frame-up job --- Trump and the Trumpites creep ever closer, step by step, to establishing a form of 21st century fascism, even within the U.S. Constitutional system. As I noted in part 1, I have previously written much on fascism, especially the potential for its rise in the United States. My book, The 15% Solution: How the Republican Religious Right Took Control of the U.S., 1981-2022, was originally published in 1996. In that "fictional history" the RRR used Constitutional means to eventually establish a very non-Constitutional apartheid state, and most certainly a fascist one.

"Fascism," as applied to the Trumpites, is becoming more widely used, from a center-right Democrat like Madeline Albright to a center-left Democrat like Paul Krugman, and a left-Democrat like Robert Reich talks about a coming Second Civil War. As noted, I like to work from definitions. I have offered longer and medium-length versions in previous work.

Here is a still shorter one:

"A single, all powerful executive branch of government, in service of a capitalist ruling class. No independent judicial or legislative branches, at any level. No independent media. Single national ideology, based on some combination of racism, misogyny, religious bigotry and authoritarianism, homophobia, and xenophobia. A State propaganda machine, massively using the Big Lie Technique. May have: full-blown dictatorship, a charismatic leader, engagement in foreign wars, use of the mob/private armies. May have transitional forms.

Most important is that fascism is a feature of capitalism. When installed, it is chosen by the nation's ruling class or the dominant sector of it as the means of control of the state apparatus when bourgeois democratic forms have failed to keep that control, or the danger is perceived that they might lose it because of rising militancy on the part of the middle and working classes against capitalist excesses that they are experiencing.

Supreme Court: States Can Purge Voters Who Don't Vote or Respond to Warnings

By Richard Wolf

WASHINGTON -- Failing to vote can lead to getting knocked off voter registration rolls, a divided Supreme Court ruled Monday in a decision that likely will help Republicans and harm Democrats.

The court's conservative majority ruled 5-4 that Ohio did not violate federal laws by purging voters who don't vote and fail to return notices confirming their residency. Civil rights groups had challenged the state for having the strictest method of purging voters in the nation.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion, noting right off the bat that an estimated one in eight voter registrations in the United States are invalid or inaccurate. He said failing to vote cannot be the sole reason for purging voters but noted that Ohio "removes registrants only if they have failed to vote and have failed to respond to a notice."

 Statement from Rev. Al Sharpton
(President and Founder of National Action Network)

“Today’s Supreme Court decision marks an outrageous backwards step for voting rights. This kind of codified voter suppression disproportionately impacts people of color and marginalized communities that are already underrepresented at the ballot box, and could mean further disenfranchisement for millions of eligible voters across the country when other states adopt similar laws. We at National Action Network have no patience for ongoing efforts to deny these Americans their constitutional right to vote – we will remain vigilant in fighting voter suppression in the courts, the legislature, and our community partners to tear down barriers to voting.”

Governor Cuomo Kicks Off Bus Tour to Pass Red Flag Gun Protection Bill

Governor Andrew Cuomo today kicked off a statewide campaign to pass the Red Flag Gun Protection Bill, also known as the Extreme Risk Protection Order Bill, advanced by the Governor last week. The bus tour stopped at Plainview - Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School in Plainview, bringing together local elected officials, school staff, and students in support of the bill. In addition, Long Island leaders endorsed the bill, which would prevent individuals determined by a court to have the potential to cause themselves or others serious harm from purchasing, possessing, or attempting to purchase or possess any type of firearm, including hand guns, rifles, or shotguns. This legislation builds on New York's strongest in the nation gun laws and prior legislative efforts, and, if passed, would make New York the first in the United States to empower its teachers and school administrators to prevent school shootings by pursuing court intervention.

"New York will not stand by and wait for Washington to take action against the gun violence and school shootings that have become all too common in this country," Governor Cuomo said. "Parents should not have to fear sending their children to school every day and teachers should not have to wonder if they will return home from work. Together, we can and will pass this common sense gun legislation and we will continue to fight to ensure gun violence has no place in this great state."

"If a fellow colleague or student poses a demonstrable threat or danger to others, we should not enable them to own a gun," said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. "With this legislation, we're continuing our push for common sense gun measures by providing teachers and administrators with a right to report and possibly prevent a terrible tragedy. Gun violence has had an enormous toll on our communities, and New York is leading the nation in an effort to protect our students and save lives."

New York Gang Database Expanded by 70 Percent Under Mayor Bill de Blasio

The New York Police Department has quietly expanded its gang database under Mayor Bill de Blasio, targeting tens of thousands of young people of color for increased surveillance even in the absence of criminal conduct.

New Yorkers have been added to the NYPD gang database under de Blasio at a rate of 342 people per month, nearly three times the rate of the prior decade. That’s despite both historically low crime levels and the fact that gang-motivated crime makes up less than 1 percent of all reported crime in New York City.

New details about who the NYPD includes in the vast database were revealed in response to a public records request by CUNY School of Law professor Babe Howell, who shared the information with The Intercept. The data reveals that as of February 2018, there were 42,334 people in the database — a 70 percent increase since de Blasio took office in January 2014. Ninety-nine percent of those added over that four-year period were not white. The NYPD also maintains a database of “inactive” gang members that includes 2,706 people.

The NYPD differentiates between crime committed to advance the interests of a gang — about 0.1 percent of all reported crime in the city between 2013 and 2017, according to Howell’s analysis — and crime committed by alleged gang members but not on behalf of gangs. According to the NYPD statistics, the latter category of crime doubled between 2013 and mid-2017, but still accounts for only 1.7 percent of all reported crime.

But the results of a separate Freedom of Information Law request suggest that the NYPD’s definition of what constitutes a gang is broad, vague, and disconnected from evidence of criminal activity.

Thinking Beyond Denuclearisation at the Trump–Kim Summit

By Charles K. Armstrong

The US–North Korea summit in Singapore is about much more than North Korean denuclearisation. The meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un offers an historic opportunity to begin restructuring the security environment in Northeast Asia and end the state of conflict between the United States and North Korea that has persisted for nearly seventy years.

The North Korean nuclear crisis as we know it began in the early 1990s, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, when the United States first accused North Korea of diverting nuclear fuel into weapons production. But nuclear confrontation on the Korean Peninsula has a much longer history, going back to the 1950s when the United States considered using the atomic bomb on North Korea during the Korean War and stationed tactical nuclear weapons in the South in 1958. North Korea, especially under Kim Jong-un, has pursued nuclear weapons as a means to deter the United States, which it sees as an existential threat in this prolonged and asymmetrical state of confrontation.

One reason the nuclear issue remains unresolved is that US policy since the 1990s has tended to separate the North Korean nuclear issue from the Korean War confrontation system that gave rise to it. But North Korea’s nuclear ambitions are the consequence, not the cause, of confrontation on the Korean Peninsula. The Koreans, in the North and in the South, understand that, and the inter-Korean ‘Panmunjom Declaration’ of 27 April focusses not on denuclearisation (although that is one of the stated goals) but on the two Koreas’ ‘firm commitment to bring a swift end to the Cold War relic of longstanding division and confrontation’, transforming the ‘unnatural state of armistice’ into a ’robust peace regime’.

Some prominent Americans have gradually begun to see it this way as well. James Clapper, the former US director of national intelligence, acknowledged in The New York Times that asking North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons as a precondition for better relations with the United States — the longstanding policy of several US administrations — is a ‘dead end’. Clapper recognises the security concerns of the North: ‘If we can figure out a way to lead North Korea’s leaders to a place where they don’t feel so threatened, we could move away from the cusp of a cataclysmic war. All of this would benefit us, whether we eliminated their nuclear capacity or not’.

Marine Veteran Trains White Supremacists in Military Tactics

Patriot Front formed after Charlottesville, and leaked messages reveal members are getting trained like they’re in boot camp.

By James Laporta

A leader of an emerging white-supremacist group is a Marine veteran who uses his military experience to train other extremist recruits in military tactics, leaked messages show.

Erik Sailors is the head of a Texas chapter of Patriot Front, a white-supremacist group that splintered from one of the main groups at the deadly white-power rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last year. Sailors gives “hip-pocket classes” (short, informal military class) to white nationalists, from the “gear list” of what members should bring to protests (Marine Corps-issued combat boots and decontaminate wipes) to lessons in mixed martial arts and hand-to-hand combat techniques, the leaked messages reveal.

The inner workings of Patriot Front and Sailors’ role were revealed after thousands of chat messages from Discord servers, a popular internet chat platform used by both white supremacists and neo-Nazis, were leaked to Unicorn Riot, a nonprofit media organization.

Sailors was identified by The Daily Beast after examining photographs from a September 2017 Patriot Front protest outside a Houston community center that was hosting an Anarchist Book Fair.

'Poor People's Campaign' Building Toward June 23 in DC

'Future Hope' Column

By Ted Glick

“We aim to shift the distorted moral narrative often promoted by religious extremists in the nation from issues like prayer in school, abortion and gun rights to one that is concerned with how our society treats the poor, those on the margins, the least of these, LGBTQIA folks, workers, immigrants, the disabled and the sick; equality and representation under the law; and the desire for peace, love and harmony within and among nations. We are committed to lifting up and deepening the leadership of those most affected by systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation and to building unity across lines of division.”

-from Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, Fundamental Principles

Two weeks from now thousands of people will be gathering in Washington, DC on the National Mall as part of the final day of an impressively coordinated, national, 40 days of action which began on Mother’s Day. Over that time, on three Mondays and the Tuesday after Memorial Day, upwards of 25,000 or so people have demonstrated on work days in 35 state capitols, and over 2,000 have been arrested taking part in nonviolent moral fusion direct action. There have been 12 million or more hits on social media. A google search for “Poor People’s Campaign” lists over 40 million results.

This is a mass movement whose time has come. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be very pleased.

As someone who has prioritized the climate crisis as my major issue to work on for the last 15 years, I have appreciated that this movement, led by Rev. William Barber, other people of color and others who in general have not seen that as a main focus, has made “ecological devastation” one of their four major issues.

By their inclusiveness when it comes to issues, as well as the range of social movements involved, the Poor People’s Campaign is modeling a central, essential element of our path forward to revolutionary change.

The demonstration in DC on June 23 will be the culmination of the 40 days of action this spring, but it will also be a launching pad for continued, united organizing and activism in the coming months. Everyone is clear that we are in a decisive political period which cries out for effective agitation, organizing and popular mobilization.

That work is being done in a way independent of political parties. As stated in the “Fundamental Principles” document, “We will do our work in a non-partisan way—no elected officials or candidates get the stage or serve on the State Organizing Committees of the Campaign. This is not about left and right, Democrat or Republican, but about right and wrong.”

For those not yet connected to the Poor People’s Campaign and the 40 days campaign, there is still time to do so. There will be two more days of action at state capitols, on June 11 and June 18, followed by people gathering in DC throughout the week leading up to the big event on the 23rd.

Long live the Poor People’s Campaign!

Ted Glick works with Beyond Extreme Energy, which is actively supporting the Poor Peoples Campaign and June 23 in DC, as well as actions in DC at FERC and a World Gas Conference June 25 and 26. More information can be found at https://beyondextremeenergy.org.

Pompeo Says U.S. Will Offer 'Unique' Assurances to North Korea

 Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

by Alexander Smith and Jonathan Allen

SINGAPORE — The U.S. is demanding the complete and verifiable nuclear disarmament of North Korea — but is willing to offer "unique" security assurances in return, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday.

He was talking hours before an unprecedented face-to-face meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

"We are prepared to take actions that will provide [North Korea] sufficient certainty that they can be comfortable denuclearization isn't something that ends badly for them," Pompeo said at a news conference.

If Democrats Can Win Here, They're on the Way to a Wave

by Heidi Przybyla

CLARKSTON, Mich. — At the Brioni Café, members of the weekly seniors' coffee klatch called "The Geezers" complained about spiraling health care and prescription drug costs. Two tables away, a garden club of Republican women were discussing health care as well, and President Donald Trump's record on women's issues.

The conversations are a prime example of why Democrat Elissa Slotkin believes she has a chance to oust this community's seemingly safe two-term House Republican incumbent, Rep. Mike Bishop, in the November midterm election — and forge a roadmap for her party's drive to regain the House majority this fall.

Craigslist Founder Gives $20 Million to CUNY Journalism School

By Jaclyn Peiser

Craig Newmark, the Craigslist entrepreneur who arguably forced the newspaper industry to change its business model after his website put a dent in the lucrative classified ads business, is giving $20 million to the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

“In this time, when trustworthy news is under attack, somebody has to stand up,” Mr. Newmark said. “And the way you stand up these days is by putting your money where your mouth is, and that’s what I’ve done.”

As a result of the $20 million gift, which was announced on Monday, the school will change its name this summer to the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York.

NY Yankees President: Mnuchin Wrong — Donor Option Legal and Fair

By Randy Levine

In the past few months, I have written several pieces taking issue with the recent tax law's treatment of the limitations on state and local deductions (SALT).

I urged Gov. Cuomo to establish a mechanism for New York state, which would allow taxpayers to set forth a portion of their state and local taxes to be contributed to valid state and local charitable entities such as schools, health organizations and other valid programs, which would allow taxpayers to receive a charitable deduction for those payments.

This mechanism has been in place and operating with no IRS objection for years in states such as Missouri and Arizona.

Showing great leadership, the governor and state legislature approved a program similar to those that have been operating unchallenged by the IRS in those states.

Now, [Treasury] Secretary [Steve] Mnuchin is warning that the IRS will not permit this mechanism to be put into effect in New York, California, New Jersey and elsewhere.
