Candidates seeking to become New York city’s next public advocate
debated the powers and role of the office during a town hall on
Wednesday, with most agreeing it should be strengthened amid talk in the
City Council of abolishing the position altogether.
The race for public advocate is expected to be one of the most
crowded contests next year after Tish James, who currently holds the
post, is sworn in as attorney general. Council Members Rafael Espinal,
Eric Ulrich and Jumaane Williams were in attendance, along with
Assemblymen Daniel O’Donnell and Michael Blake, as well as first-time
candidates Dawn Smalls and Nomiki Konst.
