Happening in Harlem: Ava DuVernay's ARRAY Presents 'VAYA'


Directed by Akin Omotoso, 115 min., South Africa

Paying homage to the Tsotsitaal namesake meaning "to go", VAYA chronicles the innocence lost by three young South Africans who journey away from their rural homes on a train bound for Johannesburg. Stirring and suspenseful, the intertwining stories of strangers struggling to survive culminate in an explosive moment based on real accounts.

VAYA made its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and garnered Omotoso the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Director.

Based in South Africa, Akin Omotoso is a Nigerian film director, writer, and actor. A prolific filmmaker, his works frequently explore life in South Africa and address xenophia, migration, cultural identity, love and empowerment. Both his father Kole Omotoso and his sister Yewande Omotoso are also writers. 

His works have been featured in festivals worldwide including the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival and the groundbreaking New York African Film Festival. 

His accolades include the Golden Horn Award for Best Achievement in Directing in a Feature Film, Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Director, Golden Horn Award for Best Achievement in Directing in a TV Drama.
