A transgender woman we represented through our Southeast Immigrant
Freedom Initiative was granted asylum this week. The woman fled
Guatemala last year in fear of her life. She was raped and tortured by
Guatemalan police and received death threats from her coworkers because
of her gender identity. She was also targeted by a drug cartel whose
members killed one of her friends.
