On the last Monday in the month of May,
Memorial Day celebrations large and small take place around the state as we
remember with solemn gratitude those who have given their lives for our
freedom.
As a Marine Corps veteran, it is especially important to me that we never forget the tremendous sacrifice our service members make every day to protect our American way of life.
Although for many of us Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and is a time for barbecues, going to the beach or spending time with family, let us not forget the true meaning of this day.

Assembly Member and DNC Vice Chair
Michael Blake
“This Memorial Day, we take time to
remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the name of service to
their country. Our service members swear an oath to protect and defend our
constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Their service is a
testament to our highest ideals as a nation; their sacrifice a reminder that we
owe our freedom and security to those brave few willing to risk their lives for
our defense.
"As we gather with friends and
family, appreciating all that we have been blessed with, we salute the
soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who have lost their
lives in service of their country.
"President John F. Kennedy reminds
us that ‘The highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.’
It is our duty to protect and care for our veterans and the families of those
who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
I wish all a happy and blessed Memorial
Day.”
