President Obama addressed the nation following his swearing-in during
the public inauguration ceremony for his second term on the West Front
of the U.S. Capitol. In his remarks he stressed national unity and
called on lawmakers to cooperate with one another to confront issues
such as climate change, job creation, civil rights, and budget issues,
saying “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute
spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate.” The
ceremony also included the musical performances, a poetry reading, the
oaths of office for president and vice president.
Because the
official inaugural day of January 20 was on a Sunday, the president was
officially sworn into office in a private ceremony at the White House
the previous day.
