One day after Mayor Bill de Blasio signaled his support for a New York Police Department review
of the department's practice of allowing officers on modified duty to
boost their salaries with overtime pay, U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of
Brooklyn said the administration could not be trusted to conduct that
review and asked the federal Department of Justice to intervene.
Blasio and incoming NYPD commissioner James O’Neill said Tuesday they would examine the city’s policy on the matter after POLITICO New York reported
that Officer Daniel Pantaleo boosted his salary by more than 20 percent
in the two years since he was placed on modified duty following his
role in the 2014 death of Eric Garner. POLITICO New York also reported
that Officer James Frascatore earned nearly $10,700 in overtime pay in
the last fiscal year, even though he was placed on modified duty for
tackling retired tennis star James Blake on September 9, 2015, in a case
of mistaken identity — an incident that prompted de Blasio and Bratton
to issue immediate apologies.
