The following statement was issued by SUNY Student
Assembly President and SUNY Trustee Thomas D. Mastro.
"We recognize and appreciate Governor Cuomo’s steadfast and longstanding support for The State University of New York. We are of course, however, discouraged with the veto of Assembly Bill 5370-A which would expand, and make permanent, the maintenance of effort requirements that apply to State support for SUNY. This bill, while understandably outside of the timeframe for general budget negotiations, would have provided crucial financial resources for students.
"SUNY students
put their cards on the table when they supported the renewal of NYSUNY 2020.
They did so with the clear expectation that the state’s maintenance of effort
would not only continue but would live up to the reality of increased
inflationary and contractual costs. We agreed to the prospect of increased tuition
if it meant adding value to our education, not backfilling state support as in
years past.
"We stand
strongly in support of the renewal of predictable tuition, coupled with a true
maintenance of effort from the state. We look forward to working alongside the
Governor and Legislature to ensure SUNY and its students are appropriately
supported in the upcoming budget process."
