The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has named Afghan refugee Aqeela Asifi its 2015 Nansen Refugee Award winner.
She was recognised for devoting her time to providing refugee girls
in Pakistan with access to an education, while also adapting to a life
in exile.
Although working with scarce resources and “significant cultural
challenges,” the 49-year-old has so far led a thousand girls through
their primary education.
