After 14 months of unrest, the UN estimates that more than 10,000 people have been killed in Syria.
With so many victims, the scale of the uprising is difficult to grasp.
But the death of Bassel Shhadeh, a 28-year-old Syrian filmmaker, in the city of Homs has personalised the conflict for students and staff at Syracuse University in New York.
