Update on 'Climate Fast NJ'

By Ted Glick

As I write I’m on day 6 of what will be a 14-day, water-only fast calling upon Governor Murphy to enact a moratorium on all new fossil fuel infrastructure in the state. I’m doing so as part of the Climate Fast NJ, which you can find out more about at www.climatefastnj.com.

I’m not the only one fasting. Owl, a leader of the Ramapough Lenape Nation in what is now northern NJ and southern NY, is also fasting on water-only for 14 days. He actually did a dry fast, consuming nothing at all, for four days; he is now on water. At least 40 other people have signed up or told us that they have fasted or will be for between one day and ten or more days, including fellow 350NJ-R leader Jerome Wagner.

As you can see if you go to the website, we have received some major news coverage already. Last Friday the Star Ledger carried a story with a big picture on page 3, and NJTV’s lead news story that evening was about the fast and the issue of new fossil fuel infrastructure in the state. The reporter was able to get Governor Murphy on tape responding to our call for a moratorium.

I was also able to talk to the governor. I did so Friday morning as he was walking from his car into a building at Princeton where he was to give a speech. My conversation with him was recorded. You can see it by going to the Climate Fast NJ website and clicking on Writings and Media.

So a lot of good things are happening with this action and on this issue, which is very hopeful, very important.

Every work day since November 7 and going until November 21, I and others are vigiling and talking to passers-by in Trenton in front of the State House on West State St. We welcome participation by anyone who would like to stand with us on any of those days. Each day at noon we have a Sharing Circle there at the State House. Some days we have musicians and singers and other artistic sharings. Following these sharings we walk down the street to the Governor’s office building and visibly press our demands.

It would be wonderful to see some of you in Trenton, and please consider fasting for a day or more yourself. You can find more info about fasting and a sign-up form at the website.

New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center Opens in Auburn

Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced the grand opening of the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn, Cayuga County. The Center serves to emphasize New York State's progressive history of promoting social and equal rights, celebrate New York's equal rights pioneers, and encourage tourism at the region's many attractions and destinations. The $10 million Center is funded and supported through the Governor's Central NY Rising Initiative, the region's comprehensive strategy to revitalize communities and grow the economy.

"New York's history is rich with progressive champions who fought for justice and equality for all, and it is critical that we honor those whose heroic efforts forged a better path for everyone," Governor Cuomo said. "New York is the progressive capital of the nation and as we continue leading the way to ensure full equality, the Equal Rights Heritage Center will serve as a poignant reminder of these important pioneers and inspire us all to keep up the fight."

Legislation Signed to Increase Rates of Compensation for Gold Star Parents

Governor Andrew Cuomo today signed legislation to provide an annual increase in the rate of compensation for Gold Star Parents who have lost a child in the armed services during a time of war. Under current law, Gold Star Parents are paid $500 annually with no provision for an annual increase. This new legislation amends the executive law to allow for an annual increase at a rate equal to the percentage increase of benefits set by the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs.

"Supporting our veterans and their families has always been a top priority for this administration, and this critical legislation will help ensure military families who have suffered the greatest loss get the support and benefits they so rightly deserve," Governor Cuomo said. "I am proud to sign this measure into law and I will continue our work to honor those brave New Yorkers who paid the ultimate price to protect our democracy and to support their families."

The Gold Star annuity is a special income-eligible annuity to recognize the emotional loss and financial implications of parents whose child has died serving this country, as there are many instances in which the deceased contributed to the financial well-being of his or her parents. Since its implementation in 2008, the Gold Star Parent Annuity has not been increased, despite inflation and other economic factors causing prices to rise. This annual increase will ensure the support we give to Gold Star Parents will not fall behind.

Senator Kathleen A. Marchione said, "The brave men and women who served our country and their families deserve our full support. This legislation will ensure that parents who have lost a child to war have the financial support they need to get by. I applaud the Governor for signing this critical legislation to recognize the ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers and their families on Veterans Day."

Assembly Member John T. McDonald III said, "It is our duty to ensure our veterans and their families receive the benefits they deserve. By signing this critical piece of legislation, Governor Cuomo is once again showing that New York stands with our veterans. I am proud to have sponsored this bill that makes sure the support we give to Gold Star Parents who have lost a child in the line of duty does not fall behind."

This Government Mortgage Program Helps Veterans with Spotty Credit History and Gets Better Results

By Andrea Riquier

Greg Sohnrey came home from Iraq in 2010 so badly injured the Veterans Administration said the then-30-year-old would never work again.

But for Sohnrey, that experience paled next to losing a baby daughter, then watching two young sons go under a surgeon’s knife to repair holes in their hearts.

Although it meant more upheaval, Sohnrey and his wife, Tammie, decided to move their family to Seattle from Texas, for what they believed would be better-quality pediatric care. And once there, they decided to become homeowners. As Sohnrey put it, “We just didn’t want to move around anymore, Just wanted to settle down into a house and not pay rent.”

National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Receives $10 Million for Expansion

Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced a $10 million expansion of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor to further recognize and pay tribute to those who have been awarded the Purple Heart, America's oldest military decoration. The expansion will include a new wing with enhanced and interactive exhibits and galleries, improved pedestrian circulation throughout the Hall, public gathering space, increased programming, a redesigned entrance, improved accessibility, native landscaping, more convenient parking and several walkway improvements.

"New York is proud to honor the brave men and women who have fought to protect the freedom and values and to provide further recognition to those wounded in combat while defending this state and this nation," Governor Cuomo said. "As we honor our veterans and their families this Veterans Day, these enhancements to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor will serve to forever honor the courage and accomplishments of all service members."

The Hall of Honor is the first in the nation dedicated to commemorating the sacrifices of the estimated 1.8 million recipients of this award. The new expansion will allow the Hall of Honor to collect, preserve and share more stories of Purple Heart recipients from all branches of service and across all conflicts for which the award has been available. Final designs of the expansion are expected to be complete by next year with construction beginning in 2020.

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located on the same grounds that were both occupied during the final months of the American Revolutionary War and later in 1932 when the first Purple Heart medals were awarded to 137 local World War I veterans. The Purple Heart is awarded to those who have been killed or wounded by enemy action.

Veterans Day 2018: All the Sales, Savings, and Freebies Vets Can Get

By Kelly Tyko

— Our editors review and recommend products to help you buy the stuff you need. If you make a purchase by clicking one of our links, we may earn a small share of the revenue. However, our picks and opinions are independent from USA Today’s newsroom and any business incentives.

Veteran's Day is a day to honor all those who have given their service to our country, and loads of retailers, restaurants, and online stores have special deals, discounts and freebies for veterans as well as active-duty military (and in some cases, spouses and immediate family can qualify too). We rounded them all up so you can spend less time searching and more time enjoying these little perks. And if you want to find even more deals and discounts on individual products, there are plenty of pre-Black Friday sales to take advantage of right now as well.

Online stores and bricks-and-mortar stores also are showing them some love as well. To thank veterans and active-duty military for their service, stores will offer special discounts to individuals with a military identification. Many businesses may also accept discharge papers, Veterans Administration cards, and veterans organization membership cards as proof of service. Some savings extend to spouses and families and many military discounts are offered year 'round or on a regular basis.
