Girls for Gender Equity: Shrink Policing in the Name of Public Health

By Ashley C. Sawyer, Policy Director, Girls for Gender Equity

Community,

Finally, folks around the country are rallying to amplify what we know all too well - the billions of dollars spent on policing swallows up resources that our schools desperately need.

Our latest policy brief shows just how many teachers, nurses, and educational resources the NYPD’s School Safety Division siphons away from classrooms. Defunding the NYPD brings us closer to the vision of #PoliceFreeSchools that other jurisdictions like Minneapolis and Portland are putting into action. Our call is simple - in the midst of a pandemic and global uprising in solidarity with the movement for Black lives, the least that New York City can do is to shrink policing in the name of public health!

Right now, the New York City Council Committee on Public Safety is debating key bills to ensure increased accountability and transparency in policing practices. But we won't win until schools are free of cops.

Today, join us in rallying the New York City Council Progressive Caucus to amplify our demands for #PoliceFreeSchools. Use our digital toolkit here to share our message!
