New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday ordered the deployment of extra
state troopers to Syracuse to help combat a rash of violence that left
three people dead and six wounded over the past month.
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh requested the extra help from the state,
which will deploy additional troopers for up to 10 daily patrols that
will be coordinated with city police, Cuomo's office said.
The governor said the state will also expand intelligence sharing
with local law enforcement on gang operations and add an investigator to
the Onondaga Crime Analysis Center and the Gang Violence Task Force.
After the initial use of troopers, the state will work with community
leaders, clergy and law enforcement on a long-term plan to reduce
violence that will likely involve state aid, Cuomo's office said.
