NYPL to Residents: 'Please Show Your Support for Our Staff!'

The following statement was submitted by Christopher Platt, Chief Branch Library Officer, New York Public Library.

The New York Public Library wouldn't exist were it not for our dedicated librarians. Across the city, in countless neighborhoods—including your own—NYPL librarians are changing lives every day.

Today, our librarians read books to babies and toddlers, distributed early literacy kits in eight different languages, connected immigrants with citizenship services, provided internet access to those who can't afford it at home, and more.

Our dedicated staff members—including those who serve Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and other local branches—do this work and so much more every single day across our 92 locations. Their work fills me with pride.

Today, on National Library Workers Day, I ask you to join me in showing your support for our tireless staff members and recognizing the vital services that they provide ALL New Yorkers.

The New York Public Library is at a critical moment. Right now the Mayor and City Council are making decisions about increasing crucial funding that would allow us to continue providing our services to all New Yorkers: kids, seniors, immigrants, families, researchers, and our city's most vulnerable residents.

Please take 30 seconds to send a message to City leaders telling them that you stand with your library.

Throughout Library Workers Day, like every day, our librarians' work continues. They'll help school-age kids with reading, homework, and even coding. We want kids to keep learning after school gets out—even during spring break and over the summer. And we want to keep our six-day service and extended hours available so that all New Yorkers can make it to their local branch.

Last year, there were almost 37 million visits to New York City's libraries. This year, let's help our librarians welcome just as many.

With your help, we can ask City leaders to make sure our library staff's important work can continue.

Today, I thank the staff of The New York Public Library for their service, and I thank you for supporting our team and allowing us to continue offering countless books, educational programs, online classes, and job resources to all New Yorkers—all for free.

Thank you
