LITTLE VALLEY — With just over two weeks before the Jan. 31 deadline,
about one-third of the pistol permit holders in Cattaraugus County have
recertified with New York State Police. The numbers are similar to the
statewide percentages.
During the week of Jan. 7, Cattaraugus
County Clerk Alan Bernstein said a check of the State Police website on
pistol permit recertification showed 5,260 individuals from the county
had recertified. More than twice that number have not recertified.
“That
does not include all the people who have renewed by mail in the last
four to eight weeks,” Bernstein said. Last week, Bernstein called the
recertification “a nightmare” because so few permit holders have
recertified and there was so little time left.
On
Friday, Cattaraugus County Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb issued a plea to
permit holders in the county to quickly recertify their handguns before
the deadline.
“As those of you who are pistol permit holders may
already be aware, Jan. 31 is the date by which many people must submit
their pistol permit recertification to the New York State Police,”
Whitcomb said in a statement.
“If you obtained a pistol permit
before Jan. 15, 2013, then Jan. 31 is the last day when you can submit
your recertification,” Whitcomb said. “For those of you who obtained a
pistol permit after Jan. 15, 2013, then you must recertify by the five
year anniversary date from when you originally obtained your permit.”
