The following statement was issued today by Hawk Newsome, President of Black Lives Matter -New York, during a press conference on his suit against the City of New York.

“This is about accountability. I was arrested for no reason other than speaking out against police brutality. The Manhattan District Attorneys’ office has agreed to dismiss the charges. I fight against police brutality daily and I'm a well know civil rights activist. If police feel as though they can do this to me with impunity then they will do it to anyone. I could've been killed as a result of the reckless way that they slammed me on ice and concrete. Thank God that I'm not a hashtag and that people are not marching in Remembrance of me. I am bringing this lawsuit to demonstrate when one is wronged in our society even by police that we have the right to damages for what happened to us. I am working with High School and college students on a Youth March taking place on December 2nd against police brutality. I will not be deterred.”
