ALBANY — Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie is the latest lawmaker to
question the legality of new rules approved last week by a State
University of New York committee that allows some charter schools to
certify its own teachers.
In 2016, the Legislature passed a bill giving SUNY more power to develop rules for the charter schools it oversees.
But Heastie, in a statement to the Daily News on Sunday, said he didn’t
intend the law to veer from current certification guidelines.
