You might expect New York
State's most densely-populated counties in and around New York City to
have the highest crime rates in the state. While some of them do rank
high, several counties in Upstate New York rank even higher.
Using 2016 crime data from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, we've ranked every county in the state by number of crimes committed per 100,000 people. These "index crimes" include both violent crimes like murder, rape and assault, and so-called property crimes like burglary and motor vehicle theft.
