Cohen Re-Elected to Lead SUNY Students

Rochester – Amherst resident and University at Albany student, Marc J. Cohen was re-elected by his peers as President of the Student Assembly for the State University of New York. At the Assembly’s Spring Convention in Rochester, New York, delegates from more than 50 campuses came together to cast their ballots. Each student government is allotted at least one vote, and then additional delegates based on their student population.

“One of the most significant issues facing student governments today is a lack of continuity in leadership,” said Cohen. “With a new Chancellor on the way, legislative battles yet to be fought, and so many critical issues facing the 600,000 students of the State University of New York, I am excited, proud, and humbled to have been elected for another term. SUNY is home to the greatest students in the world, and helping to lead them has been the highlight of the college career.”

As President of the Student Assembly, Cohen has also served as a voting member on the SUNY Board of Trustees as well as a Trustee on the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). His administration this year has consistently stood against tuition increases, worked to expand access and affordability, helped push the effort to “ban the box” from admission applications, spoken out against the discrimination of undocumented students, and advocated for comprehensive policies relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“Marc has been a valued partner this past year, particularly with respect to SUNY’s ‘ban the box’ and mental health services resolutions, as well as his advocacy for SUNY students during the 2017-2018 New York State budget discussions,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “My congratulations to Marc for being voted again to president of SUNY Student Assembly, and my thanks to him for his steadfast commitment and dedication to his fellow students.”

Cohen has ambitious plans for the remainder of this term, and for the year ahead, citing how much work there is yet to do. “SUNY has proven time and time again to be not only the largest, but the greatest system of public higher education in the country. I look forward to continuing to work with students, administration, and elected officials to make the State University of New York the very best that it can be.”
