U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter,
D-Rochester, on Wednesday, announced she introduced legislation to move
Election Day from a Tuesday to the weekend, with two-day voting on the
first Saturday and Sunday after the first Friday in November.
New York Reps. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, and Grace Meng, D-Queens, are among 26 original co-sponsors, all Democrats.
Supporters of the legislation said it would increase voter turnout if elections are held on weekends, when it is more convenient for people who work on week days.
"Holding Election Day one day during the week is an outdated requirement that was established over a century ago," Slaughter said in a press release.
"Each year millions of Americans face the daunting challenge of juggling between work and family schedules to exercise their Constitutionally-guaranteed right to vote, Tonko said, in the press release.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, is reviewing the legislation, said Tom Flanagin, the congresswoman's spokesman.
