Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced
$658 million to support access to healthy and nutritious food for some
of New York’s most vulnerable residents. The funds will be awarded to 92
health and wellness providers that administer New York State’s Special
Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and
drive an expansion of services where the need is greatest. These 92
providers support approximately 400 WIC clinics across the state,
reaching nearly 500,000 New Yorkers every month.
“Providing the opportunity for all New Yorkers to have access to fresh, healthy and nutritious food is a top priority of this administration and essential to this state’s future health," Governor Cuomo said. “This funding not only ensures that these essential services will continue in communities across New York, but also expands them in order to reach more people in need.”
“New York State’s WIC program is vital to ensuring that families with young children have access to resources essential for leading healthy lives,” said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. “With these funds, local contractors who provide these services will be able to strengthen their operations and expand their reach to help even more families.”
The WIC program provides resources to qualifying New Yorkers in need of nutrition assistance. The WIC program also helps to reduce obesity, health disparities and the risk for chronic disease among program participants by promoting positive health outcomes and breastfeeding. WIC currently provides services to approximately 110,000 income eligible pregnant, post-partum or breastfeeding women and approximately 360,000 infants and children up to five years of age each month. One goal of this new round of funding is to expand the reach of the program in underserved areas to provide services to 20,000 new participants. Ultimately, the aim is to serve at least 50 percent of the eligible population in each county.
This funding is administered over five years and is a combination of state and federal money. The grant awardees that will operate the state’s WIC clinics for the next five years are:

Congressman Charles B. Rangel said, "There
are many people in our City and State who rely on SNAP benefits as a
lifeline. Sadly, too often, most are forced to opt for cheap,
high-calorie meals that give the most bang for the buck, which can
increase their chances for serious health conditions such as diabetes,
heart disease and cancer. I applaud Governor Cuomo for his efforts to
make sure that everyone has access to food that is affordable and
nutritious as well."
Congresswoman Louise Slaughter said, “When kids eat well, they grow up ready to take on the world. But every day in Rochester, far too many children are starting and ending their days hungry. Ensuring children have access to proper nutrition is the first step in preparing them to live healthy, productive lives. That’s why I won’t stop fighting to ensure that all New Yorkers, no matter their background, are able to provide healthy food for their families.”
Congressman Eliot Engel said, "Healthy living starts with a healthy diet, which is often far too expensive for many women and children living in New York. The measure of every great society is how well they treat their most vulnerable populations, which is why the WIC program is so vital to our state. The $658 million in grants Governor Cuomo has allocated to WIC—including $12,557,955 to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital, $5,105,805 to Mt. Vernon Neighborhood Health Center, and $12,691,254 to the Westchester County Department of Health—will improve the health and nutrition of mothers and children across New York. I am pleased the Governor has made this commitment to New Yorkers’ health and well-being.”
