Starting in 2013, the government of the United States will begin cutting $500 billion from the national defence budget, in a deal brokered between Republican and Democrat lawmakers. The matter is a major political issue, and was the focus of a congressional hearing in Washington DC on Wednesday. Many of the cuts are planned to be made by slashing budgets for support programmes for low income citizens, as welll as in defence and other sectors. Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington, DC, the US capital.
