McCall to Serve as Chair of SUNY Board of Trustees


Renowned Leader Served as a New York State Senator and U.N. Ambassador

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the appointment of H. Carl McCall to serve as chairman of the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees.

"Carl McCall will bring decades of experience in public service to the helm of the SUNY Board of Trustees," said
Cuomo .

"His extensive financial background makes him the perfect leader for the Board as SUNY helps drive New York's economic development. I look forward to working with Carl and the SUNY trustees to maintain the access and affordability of our public universities, while building these schools into national leaders in research and innovation, which attract high-paying jobs to the Empire State."

McCall has served on the SUNY Board of Trustees since 2007 and currently chairs both the SUNY Finance and Administration Committee and the State University Construction Fund. From 1993 to 2002, he served as Comptroller of the State of New York, where as Chief Fiscal Officer of the state, he was responsible for governmental and financial oversight and pension fund management.

Previously, McCall served three terms as a New York State Senator representing the upper Manhattan district of New York City. He has also served as an Ambassador to the United Nations, Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and as Commissioner of the New York State Division of Human Rights.

From 1985 to 1993, the former senator served as a Vice President of Citibank. He also served as President of the New York City Board of Education from 1991 to 1993, where he set policy for the largest school system in the nation.


McCall was educated at Dartmouth College, Andover Newton Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh. He is the recipient of nine honorary degrees.

About the SUNY Board of Trustees

The SUNY Board of Trustees is the governing body of the State University of New York. The Board consists of 18 members, 15 of whom are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate. In addition, the President of the Student Assembly of the State University serves as an ex-officio voting Trustee, and the President of the University Faculty Senate and the President of the Faculty Council of Community Colleges serve as ex-officio non-voting Trustees.

The Board's responsibilities include appointing and approving University leadership including the Chancellor and senior system staff and campus presidents, regulating the tuition and fees charged by SUNY campuses, and granting the degrees, diplomas, certificates and honorary degrees that SUNY issues every year.

The Board meets nearly every month of the year, and meetings are open to the public and webcast live to give New Yorkers a front-row seat to University operations. The Board also holds public open forums twice a year to give the public the opportunity to interact with the board and provide input.
