New
York, NY – Gwendolyn Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, and Sybrina
Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, co-authored a letter to New
York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson about the unintended effects of a ban
on menthol cigarettes.
While stating clearly that they in no way
encourage, support or promote smoking, the bill, as it stands, will create
a whole new market for "loosies" and reintroduce another
version of stop-and-frisk policing in Black and financially-challenged
communities. They voiced concern that a
ban will re-introduce many hard to employ, young
Black New Yorkers to the criminal justice system.
The letter was shared with Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network.
