The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) filed a federal lawsuit this week to force the Department of
Homeland Security to provide detained immigrants with a constitutionally
acceptable level of access to legal counsel.
The suit, the first of its
kind, highlights decades-long practices that violate the rights of
detainees, many of whom are eligible for release but languish in prison
or get deported because they lack legal representation.
