Members of Congress will continue to
be paid during the government shutdown, but four upstate New York
Republicans say they won't accept their paychecks as long as the
political standoff continues.
U.S. Reps. Chris Collins, John Katko, Elise Stefanik and Claudia Tenney will refuse their pay for the duration of the shutdown. Katko, R-Camillus, said he won't accept his paycheck "until the government reopens and all of our nation's defense personnel are paid." Collins, R-Clarence, Stefanik, R-Willsboro, and Tenney, R-New Hartford, sent letters requesting the House chief administrative officer withhold their pay until the shutdown concludes.
Tenney said if her paychecks aren't withheld, she will make a donation equal to her net pay to organizations in her district affected by the shutdown.
