A Queens Democratic state senator is introducing legislation to bar
lawmakers from accepting outside income from companies with business
before the state now or in the previous three years, the Daily News has
learned.
Sen. Tony Avella calls his bill a “no-brainer for anyone interested in rooting out everything that creates public distrust.
“No reason exists for a legislator to make money from a firm that has
present or past lobbying business with this state,” Avella said. “That
presents the ultimate conflict that we are trying to weed out of
Albany.”
Under the bill, lawmakers found in violation could be fined by the
state ethics commission up to $50,000. A “willful violation” could be
subject to a misdemeanor criminal charge.
