DEA Deputy Assistant Administrator Louis Milione says his agency sees
the synthetic drug threat as second only to the opioid epidemic and
can’t keep up with the drug traffickers. He delivered these remarks at a
House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing focusing on the dangers of
synaptic drug use. Other witnesses included Washington, DC police
officer William Smith, University of North Carolina chemical biology
professor David Nichols along with Devin and Veronica Eckhardt also
provided testimony. Their 19 year old son, Connor Eckhardt, died in July
2014 after smoking a synthetic marijuana known as "spice".
