Key Mayor de Blasio Donor Secretly Pleads Guilty to Giving Campaign Cash for ‘Official Action’

By Victoria Bekiempis and Greg B. Smith

A major donor to Mayor de Blasio has secretly pleaded guilty to making campaign donations to public officials in exchange for official action, the Daily News has learned.

This stunning admission was made by Jona Rechnitz, a Brooklyn real estate investor who months ago began cooperating with prosecutors in former Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara's pay-to-pay probe of de Blasio.

The assertion surfaced in court papers detailing for the first time Rechnitz's admissions of criminal activity.

Rechnitz's criminal "information" was quietly unsealed by the courts March 15, the same day the U.S.

Attorney's office announced it had decided not to bring criminal charges against de Blasio or his top aides. Prosecutors requested the unsealing order two days before.

Ortt, Maziarz Indicted on Felony Election Law Violations

An Albany County grand jury indicted two state senators Wednesday – one sitting and one retired – on felony election law violations, as part of Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman’s probe of election law fraud in Niagara County.

State Sen. Robert G. Ortt and former Sen. George D. Maziarz, both with deep roots as North Tonawanda Republicans, are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning in Albany.

A spokeswoman for Ortt acknowledged late Wednesday that the senator faces three counts of offering a false instrument for filing. Just hours earlier, he voluntarily appeared before the grand jury probing the campaign finances of Maziarz and the Niagara County Republican Committee.

The senator will not resign and will fight the charges, according to Andrea Bozek, Ortt's spokeswoman.

Ortt issued a statement Wednesday evening, saying: “We look forward to telling voters the truth about Eric Schneiderman and exposing him for the power hungry, political opportunist he is and I will fight this ridiculous charge.”

Former Niagara County Republican Chairman Henry F. Wojtaszek pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor election law violation, as well.

LIFE AFTER PRISON: MINISTER CALIPH MUAB-EL

Minister Caliph Muab-El was sent to a prison for adults at age 15. At the age of 19, he spent 10 out of 15 years in solitary confinement at a super-maximum facility. While incarcerated, he turned his cell into a classroom to expand his education.

At one point, he was precluded from getting his degree as a result of the Department of Correction’s policy of not allowing inmates to go to college. However, he remained determined in his effort and went on to receive a paralegal license from Blackstone College after being released. He also studied business administration and law at Murray State University through correspondence courses.

He was ordained through the Universal Church of Christ and Now Faith International and has been the subject of numerous news profiles in the state of Wisconsin and other sections of the country.

As a motivational speaker, he frequently travels the U.S. to give lectures on mass incarceration, racial injustice, police brutality and inequality.

In 2016, he was voted in by the Gamaliel Network as the Liaison for Mass-Incarceration for the African-American Leadership Commission.

Most recently, he was honored as one of the 44 Most Influential African-Americans in the State of Wisconsin (the 44 Black Power Class of 2016) and given an award by the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks.

White House Press Briefing

Statement by President Trump on Nowruz

This week, I would like to send my best wishes to all those around the world celebrating the wonderful ancient holiday of Nowruz.  Many millions of people of Iranian, Iraqi, Turkish, South Asian, and Central Asian heritage will come together with their families during this time to commemorate the arrival of spring.

Nowruz means “new day” in Persian.  It is an occasion to celebrate new beginnings, a sentiment that is particularly meaningful for so many Iranians who have come to our country in recent decades to make a new start in a free land.

For many years, I have greatly enjoyed wonderful friendships with Iranian-Americans, one of the most successful immigrant groups in our country’s contemporary history. They come from diverse religious backgrounds—including Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Zoroastrian, and Baha’i—but all share an affection for their ancestral heritage.

Cyrus the Great, a leader of the ancient Persian Empire, famously said that “[f]reedom, dignity, and wealth together constitute the greatest happiness of humanity. If you bequeath all three to your people, their love for you will never die.”

To the Iranian people and all those around the world celebrating Nowruz: On behalf of the American people, I wish you freedom, dignity, and wealth.

Nowruz Pirouz (Happy Nowruz).

House Intel Chairman: Trump’s Communications Possibly Picked Up By ‘Incidental’ Surveillance

President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday he feels vindicated after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes' revelation that he has seen reports from the U.S. intelligence community showing communication from members of the transition team — and possibly from the president himself — were "incidentally" collected as part of a broader surveillance effort.

Nunes said he was "alarmed" by the findings and trekked to the White House Wednesday afternoon to personally brief President Trump.

"What I've read bothers me," Nunes told reporters outside the White House after sharing his findings with the president. "And I think it should bother the president himself and his team because I think some of it seems to be inappropriate."

"I appreciate him coming over," Trump said when asked by reporters about the visit.

Earlier in the week, Nunes said evidence was so far lacking for the president's claims that former President Barack Obama illegally ordered a wiretap of Trump Tower before the November election. On Monday, FBI Director James Comey, in testimony before Congress Monday, refuted Trump's claim that Obama wiretapped his communications.

House Freedom Caucus Chair: ‘Not Enough Votes to Pass’ GOP Health Care Bill

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Mark Meadows said Wednesday that there are enough Freedom members to kill the GOP health care bill and that a vote should be postponed.

Meadows met with members of the conservative caucus, which is staunchly opposed to the GOP health care plan, in the afternoon as Republican leaders scramble to assemble enough party line support to pass their replacement measure in a floor vote expected Thursday.

"A self imposed deadline doesn't necessarily make for good policy," Meadows told reporters after the meeting.

"We believe we need to postpone the vote and get it right," Meadows added. "We need changes to the underlying bill before we vote on it in the House. ... There's not enough votes to pass it tomorrow."

However, a senior GOP aide told NBC News that there are no plans to delay the vote beyond Thursday.

Cuomo: '“If the Federal Government Wants to Buy Votes, Let Them Pay For It'

Statement from Governor Cuomo on the Potential Income Tax
Impact of Congressman Collins' and Faso's Proposed AHCA Amendment

“The American Health Care Act (AHCA) as drafted by the Republican Congress and amended by Representatives Collins and Faso will devastate the New York Healthcare system. The Republican plan will leave 2.7 million New Yorkers without healthcare and cut $4.7 billion from the state’s Medicaid budget. This comes after the Republicans promised the exact opposite: That no American would lose healthcare and that no block grant would cut funding to the state.

“Life has options and the hard reality is that Collins and Faso are leaving New York State with only two unacceptable choices. Either, we could pass on the devastating cuts to our hospitals, nursing homes and the 40 percent of New Yorkers who currently receive Medicaid and health benefits. Or, we would be forced to raise state income taxes – either by increasing taxes on all New Yorkers by 10 percent, or if Collins and Faso have their way in protecting only the wealthy, on the middle class by 26 percent. Any tax increase flies in the face of New York’s success in reducing spending and taxes to record lows.

“To devastate our healthcare industry will not only affect millions of lives, but disrupt one of the state’s main economic engines. Healthcare is a pillar of the New York economy.

“Make no mistake. The Republican house members are recklessly attempting to buy votes for the AHCA with an IOU to the New York taxpayers. One nonsensical suggestion is that the state should ‘find the money.’ We have cut our spending to record low limits. Five years ago we imposed a 3 percent cap on the growth of Medicaid in New York. Our hospital sector operates on the lowest margins in the country. New York’s 3 percent rate of growth is lower than most other states.

“If the federal government wants to buy votes, let them pay for it.

“It’s absurd to ask the state to pay the cost, while the same bill provides a $150 billion tax cut to the 1 percent richest Americans and Republicans in Congress also support a record $54 billion increase for the Pentagon. If they think that $4.7 billion is merely chump change, they should factor it into their own budget – propose $145 billion tax break or a $49 billion increase to the defense budget.

“If the Republican representatives are responsible to their districts, they must provide federal revenue to pay for their actions. Isn’t it their job to help – rather than hurt – their district?

“If this bill is passed as is, our federal representatives will be responsible for massive income or sales tax increases or devastating cuts to New York’s healthcare system. That is the plain reality. No political rhetoric can change it. New Yorkers will hold them accountable for their vote. This is radical conservative ideology at work rather than real public policy to help the very people of this state who elected them.”

NYS Medical Director: 'They've Declared War on New York Health Care'

The following statement was submitted by Jason Helgerson, New York State Medical Director.

As New York's Medicaid Director, I couldn’t be more appalled by House Speaker Paul Ryan’s health care plan.

This bill would take health care away from 2.7 million New Yorkers, and cost state taxpayers $6.9 billion in additional costs. It’s a cynical ploy that affects all New Yorkers and will be the biggest blow to health care in our state’s history. Worse still, Congressmen Chris Collins and John Faso have proposed an amendment that hurts New Yorkers even more and is against the interest of their constituents and all New Yorkers.

If New Yorkers join together and make our voices heard we can still defeat this attack on our health care system. The House of Representatives plans to vote on this devastating legislation tomorrow -- so we need New Yorkers to speak out now.

Call (202) 224-3121 to be connected to your representative and say vote NO on the bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. You can also look up your representative and find out more information on how to contact them up here.

The more we learn about repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act, the sicker New York gets. I’ve been crunching the numbers, and I won’t mince words: New Yorkers face dire circumstances if this bill passes. Here’s a look at the numbers:

2.7 million New Yorkers will lose coverage
New York’s total loss in funding would amount to $6.9 billion
Nursing Home Payments would be cut by $401 million
Home care payments would be cut by $360 million
Hospital payments would be cut by $355 million

With this attack on our health care, they've declared war on New York, and we need to stand up and show them New Yorkers won’t be pushed around.

Call your member of Congress now and tell them to vote NO on the bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act! Call (202) 224-3121 to be connected to your representative now.

Thank you for pushing back against this dangerous piece of legislation.

Senator James Sanders, Jr. Responds to Abrupt Closing of Far Rockaway Community Center

Earlier this month, From The G-Man contacted the offices of several Far Rockaway politicians for comments regarding the abrupt and unexplained closing of the Redfern Community Center.

NY1 News reported that "for the many children who call the Redfern Houses home, this community center has been a safe haven during after school hours."

While the majority of those contacted did not response, State Senator James Sanders, Jr. issued the following statement.

“We are aware of the situation and we are working with the appropriate agencies to see that service is returned to the Redfern site as soon as possible. We don’t care how it’s done, but we insist that the people are served. It is sad that a reputable organization like the P.A.L. would withdraw at a moment’s notice. We are going to work with NYCHA to get a new organization in there.”

'The Rights of Colored Citizens in Traveling', 1842

In 1842, Charles Lenox Remond became one of the first African-Americans to give testimony before a state legislature when he addressed a committee of the Massachusetts House of Representatives investigating discrimination in public transportation. Here Remond contrasted the absence of discrimination in his travels in Europe with his rude treatment on public transportation in and around Boston. His remarks appear below.

The Rights of Colored Citizens in Traveling

By Charles Lenox Remond

Mr. Chairman, and Gentlemen of the Committee: In rising at this time, and on this occasion, being the first person of color who has ever addressed either of the bodies assembling in this building, I should perhaps, in the first place, observe that, in consequence of the many misconstructions of the principles and measures of which I am the humble advocate, I may in like manner be subject to similar misconceptions from the moment I open my lips in behalf of the prayer of the petitioners for whom I appear, and therefore feel I have the right at least to ask, at the hands of this intelligent Committee, an impartial hearing; and that whatever prejudices they may have imbibed, be eradicated from their minds, if such exist. I have, however, too much confidence in their intelligence, and too much faith in their determination to do their duty as the representatives of this Commonwealth, to presume they can be actuated by partial motives. Trusting, as I do, that the day is not distant, when, on all questions touching the rights of the citizens of this State, men shall be considered great only as they are good—and not that it shall be told, and painfully experienced, that, in this country, this State, aye, this city, the Athens of America, the rights, privileges and immunities of its citizens are measured by complexion, or any other physical peculiarity or conformation, especially such as over which no man has any control. Complexion can in no sense be construed into crime, much less be rightfully made the criterion of rights. Should the people of color, through a revolution of Providence, become a majority, to the last I would oppose it upon the same principle; for, in either case, it would be equally reprehensible and unjustifiable—alike to be condemned and repudiated. It is JUSTICE I stand here to claim, and not FAVOR for either complexion.

And now, sir, I shall endeavor to confine my remarks to the same subject which has occupied the attention of the Committee thus far, and to stand upon the same principle which has been so ably and so eloquently maintained and established by my esteemed friend, Mr. Phillips.

Our right to citizenship in this State has been acknowledged and secured by the allowance of the elective franchise and consequent taxation; and I know of no good reason, if admitted in this instance, why it should be denied in any other.

With reference to the wrongs inflicted and injuries received on railroads, by persons of color, I need not say they do not end with the termination of the route, but, in effect, tend to discourage, disparage and depress this class of citizens. All hope of reward for upright conduct is cut off. Vice in them becomes virtue. No distinction is made by the community in which we live. The most vicious is treated as well as the most respectable, both in public and private.

But it is said we all look alike. If this is true, it is not true that we all behave alike. There is marked difference; and we claim a recognition of this difference.

In the present state of things, they find God’s provisions interfered with in such a way, by these and kindred regulations, that virtue may not claim her divinely appointed rewards. Color is made to obscure the brightest endowments, to degrade the fairest character, and to check the highest and most praiseworthy aspirations. If the colored man is vicious, it makes but little difference; if besotted, it matters not; if vulgar, it is quite as well; and he finds himself as well treated, and received as readily into society, as those of an opposite character. Nay, the higher our aspirations, the loftier our purposes and pursuits, does this iniquitous principles of prejudice fasten upon us, and especial pains are taken to irritate, obstruct and injure. No reward of merit, no remuneration for services, no equivalent is rendered the deserving. And I submit, whether this unkind and unchristian policy is not well calculated to make every man disregardful of his conduct, and every woman unmindful of her reputation.
