Donald Trump: Turning the Corner Towards Fascism (But First Let’s Define It)

Various observers, analysts and political figures have been labelling Donald Trump as a “fascist for quite some time.  In a column published in this space last October I considered some of the aspects of that appellation, noting where Trump qualified and where he did not.  Right-wingers have called him fascist, in this case one Dan Hodges from Great Britain (which may be Little England by the time you read this): “Donald Trump is an outright fascist who should be banned from Britain today.”  In The New Republic one Ryu Spaeth referred to him as a “scary fascist.”  (By-the-by, unless one is a fascist oneself, is there any other kind?)  Mediaite.com noted that Trump was being compared to Hitler.  He has also been referred to as a “proto-fascist,” whatever that is.  It happens that most observers using the term don’t stop/bother to define it.  But if the term is to have meaning historic/political meaning if and when it is applied to Trump, it is in my view vital that that is done.

Recently, a Professor Emeritus of Economics at Drake University published a very important consideration of just what fascism is, and how it is distinguished from mere authoritarianism/totalitarianism.  The paper is very significantly entitled: “Distorting Fascism to Sanitize Capitalism.”  Prof. Hossein-zadeh begins his paper thusly:

“The facile and indiscriminate use of the term fascism has led to a widespread misunderstanding and misuse of its meaning. Asked to define fascism, most people would respond in terms such as dictatorship, anti-Semitism, mass hysteria, efficient propaganda machine, mesmerizing oratory of a psychopathic leader, and the like. … Such a pervasive misconception of the meaning of the term fascism is not altogether fortuitous. It is largely because of a longstanding utilitarian misrepresentation of the term. Fascism is deliberately obfuscated in order to sanitize capitalism. Ideologues, theorists and opinion-makers of capitalism have systematically shifted the systemic sins of fascism from market/capitalist failures to individual or personal failures.”

The fascist regimes that dominated major parts of the globe from 1919 to 1945, for example in Hungary (from 1919), in Italy from 1922 (and of course it was Mussolini who gave the name to the governmental form), Japan from 1935, and of course Nazi Germany from 1933, all arose to defend capitalism against one form of socialism or another (or even liberal democracy, if the capitalist ruling class viewed it as a threat to their economic dominance).  As Prof. Hossein-zadeh points out, it is of critical importance to understand that this is the central defining characteristic of this special form of authoritarianism, if it is to be effectively combatted.

Since I wrote my book on the future rise of fascism in the United States The 15% Solution: How the Republican Religious Right Took Control of the U.S., 1981-2022 (originally published in 1996 under a slightly different title, The 15% Solution: A Political History of American Fascism, 2002-2022), I have always been careful to carefully define the term.  In fact, in my book, there is a 10-page Appendix (II) devoted to the subject.  Currently, I am using the following short definition:

“A politico-economic system in which there is: total executive branch control of both the legislative and administrative powers of government; no independent judiciary; no Constitution that embodies the Rule of Law standing above the people who run the government; no inherent personal rights or liberties; a single national ideology that first demonizes and then criminalizes all political, religious, and ideological opposition to it; the massive and regular use of hate, fear, racial and religious prejudice, the Big Lie technique, mob psychology, mob actions and ultimately individual and collective violence to achieve political and economic ends; a capitalist/corporate economy; with the ruling economic class’ domination of economic, fiscal, and regulatory policy.”

Cuomo Slams Assembly and de Blasio ‘Political Agendas’ in Daycare Reform Fight

Gov. Andrew Cuomo trashed Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Democrat-dominated Assembly over their efforts to block a daycare center regulation package—as the governor prepared to sign “emergency regulations” instating the new rules over their resistance.

Addressing the press after an unrelated event at Grand Central Station, the governor bashed his fellow Democrats and praised the Republican-run State Senate, which backed proposals he laid out in February to allow the state to more easily shutter babysitting facilities. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie initially endorsed the measures, but declined to bring them to the floor for a vote following heavy lobbying from the mayor’s office.

The de Blasio administration was ostensibly concerned that the proposal would deprive low-income New Yorkers of childcare options, but may have been alarmed at the potential for further Cuomo incursions into city business.

Small Steps, but No Major Push, to Integrate New York’s Schools

By Elizabeth A. Harris

For all its kaleidoscopic diversity, New York City has one of the most segregated school systems in the country, with divisions created and reinforced by decades of policy decisions. But over the past year, some areas of the system have begun experimenting with ways to desegregate, if not by the color of children’s skin, at least by their families’ wealth.

A middle school in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, hopes to set aside seats for poor children in fall 2017. A small district on the Lower East Side of Manhattan is looking to shake up admissions so that poor and middle-class students will learn together. And a popular elementary school in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan has reserved more than 60 percent of its seats this coming school year for students from low-income families.

In a system in which about 75 percent of students are poor and nearly 70 percent are black or Hispanic, these efforts depend on some degree of local socioeconomic diversity. In gentrifying sections of Brooklyn, rich and poor live near one another, as they do in parts of Manhattan where public housing projects are next to expensive apartment buildings. But in most city school districts, where poor children live near other poor children, no such diversity exists. There, meaningful integration would require major intervention.

Alton Sterling, Father of Five—One More Black Man Shot Down By American Police

By Goldie Taylor

Alton Sterling was selling CDs when cops shot him dead. Why are people racing to judge him rather than his killers?

“If you fucking move, I swear to God!”

It has been mere hours since Alton Sterling was tackled and shot dead by two police officers. As the East Baton Rouge parish medical examiner’s office completes its work, we as a larger society have already begun to make our own decisions about how he lived and why he died.

We will do that without knowing much of anything about him, other than that he was a 37-year-old father of five, a black man selling bootleg CDs to earn a few dollars. Ultimately, what one believes about what happened last night outside of a convenience mart in a rundown section of Louisiana’s capital city, depends largely on who we are and the America we have encountered. Race and class are unfortunate, yet inextricable factors—for us, for the police and for the dead man.

The incident, captured on cell phone video, comes amid a national conversation about police violence in non-white communities. Each year in the U.S., there are over a thousand deadly shooting by police officers. African Americans make up a disproportionate and overwhelming majority of the dead. We are disproportionately stopped, subjected to search and arrest—disportionately the victims of police violence.

Letter to Rev. Al Sharpton from Rev. Shelton Charles Dixon on the Shooting of Alton Sterling

Below is the content of a letter from Rev. Shelton Charles Dixon to NAN President and Founder Rev. Al Sharpton, regarding the police shooting of Alton Sterling:

Rev. Sharpton-

We are outraged by the video tape showing Alton Sterling being shot by Baton Rouge police officers while he was restrained and are calling for an immediate, fair and impartial investigation and justice for his family. In order to achieve justice we are seeking the presence of Rev. Sharpton and National Action Network (NAN) in Baton Rouge to meet with the family of Mr. Sterling because of NAN’s long track record of assisting families who are victims of police misconduct.

There will always be emotion evoked in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy like this and when there is a life lost. We are seeking the involvement of an organization like National Action Network because we want to ensure that the fight for justice will continue even when the cameras go away.

Sincerely,

Rev. Shelton Charles Dixon

SWC Testifies on Anti-BDS Legislation

The following letter was submitted by Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean at the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Dear Editor,

Last week, I had the honor of testifying in favor of anti-BDS legislation before a Senate Judiciary Committee in California's State Capitol.

As the lead-off witness on behalf of State Assemblyman Richard Bloom’s (AB 2844) (pictured), I provided historic background of the Israel/Apartheid and anti-Israel boycotters, which I personally experienced at the infamous UN Durban ‘anti-racism’ Conference in South Africa, just days before 9/11/2001.

During my testimony, I also spoke about crucial Israeli expertise to help address disastrous water shortages in California and other places around the globe; Israel’s incredible advances in the field of bio-medicine that is helping medical centers and physicians to better treat their patients; and the incredible synergy between Silicon Valley and Israel’s brilliant hi-tech innovators that improve our daily lives and commerce.

The two-hour debate was tense and intense with pro-“BDSers” fully represented. In the end, the vote in this committee was 5-2 in favor of AB 2844. We hope the bill will pass both Houses later this Summer.

The SWC wishes to commend Jewish activists across America who have helped turn the tide against BDS in seven key states.

We will continue to keep you informed on these and other issues in the months to come.

Politics in Action: H.R. 4361

STATEMENT OF ADMINISTRATION POLICY
H.R. 4361 - Federal Information Systems Safeguards Act of 2016
(Rep. Palmer, R-AL, and one cosponsor)

The Administration is strongly committed to upholding the highest accountability standards for Federal agencies and the Federal workforce, including strict standards to ensure that employees act in the best interests of the American people, and we appreciate the Congress' attention to government reform and oversight efforts.  However, certain sections of this legislation would weaken the rights of Federal employees, and be impractical and administratively burdensome to implement.  They would also have harmful unintended consequences, while failing to address the issues they are designed to solve and while raising serious constitutional concerns. Because of this, the Administration strongly opposes H.R. 4361 as considered by the Rules Committee.

The Administration believes that the approach to accountability in certain provisions of the legislation is misguided. For example, H.R. 4361 would require expedited removal procedures for agency senior executives that would raise significant constitutional concerns under the Appointments Clause and the Due Process Clause.  These procedures impose a time-constricted case review and appeal process that would permit administrative judges who are not appointed in a constitutionally appropriate manner to render removal decisions, would make those decisions final if the administrative judges fail to act within 21 days, and would deny any review of the decisions of the administrative judges by the Merit Systems Protection Board.  These procedures are substantially the same as those in section 707 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014, which the Department of Justice notified the Congress in May of this year could not be defended against constitutional challenge.  These provisions would significantly alter and diminish important rights and protections that are available to the vast majority of other employees across the government and that are essential to safeguarding employees' rights.  Moreover, these provisions would hamper the Federal government's efforts to attract and retain top talent committed to serving in the Senior Executive Service.

The requirements for mandatory senior executive reassignment would be problematic to implement as written, and duplicative of existing efforts.  Under a December 2015 Executive Order, "Strengthening the Senior Executive Service," agencies are already required to develop and implement a senior executive rotation plan.  The Executive Order provides a more productive approach that considers the agencies' talent and succession management plans, as well as the executive’s individual development plan.

The bill would require the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to report on the use of union official time across the Executive Branch on matters not currently covered in existing OPM reporting.  The additional requirements are subjective and virtually impossible to measure.  These additional, burdensome requirements would have to be manually gathered for approximately 2,000 local bargaining units across the Executive Branch, making it challenging, if not impossible, to meet the statutory deadlines established by the bill.

In addition to objectionable personnel policy provisions, this bill would set policy that would undermine existing government-wide cybersecurity and records management policies.  Amending individual agency records management practices is unnecessary and would set a problematic precedent, as the Federal Records Act already provides clear, transparent, and effective requirements for managing Federal records.

Finally, the "Midnight Rule" provisions in this bill would infringe on the powers of the President to faithfully execute the laws in the final months of the term.  They would arbitrarily prohibit the issuance of key rules and thus prevent the implementation of laws passed by the Congress through otherwise lawful, well-justified, and beneficial regulations, and would also subject the rulemaking process to additional, unnecessary judicial review provisions.

If the President were presented with H.R. 4361, his senior advisors would recommend he veto the bill.

Republicans Cry Foul at FBI's Decision on Clinton's Emails

Republicans wasted no time in criticizing the FBI's decision not to recommend criminal charges to the Justice Department after its investigation of Hillary Clinton's emails as Secretary of State. House Speaker Paul Ryan released one of the the strongest reactions, saying the decision "defies explanation" and will "set a terrible precedent."

"No one should be above the law. But based upon the director's own statement, it appears damage is being done to the rule of law," Ryan said. "Declining to prosecute Secretary Clinton for recklessly mishandling and transmitting national security information will set a terrible precedent. The findings of this investigation also make clear that Secretary Clinton misled the American people when she was confronted with her criminal actions."

National Security Council Notes: The Terrorist Attacks in Jeddah, Qatif, and Medina, Saudi Arabia

The following statement was issued today by National Security Council Spokesperson Ned Price.

The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attacks yesterday in Saudi Arabia and commends the work of Saudi security forces, whose decisive response prevented further loss of life.  Although the investigation of these attacks is still in its early phases, the intent of the terrorists is clear: to sow division and fear.  As we join in mourning the loss of at least six individuals, we stand in solidarity with the Saudi people, particularly during this time of celebration and prayer that marks the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan.  Moreover, we reaffirm our commitment to the security of Saudi Arabia and to further strengthening our robust counterterrorism cooperation with the Saudi government.

Statement by the President on the Passing of Abner J. Mikva

No matter how far we go in life, we owe a profound debt of gratitude to those who gave us those first, firm pushes at the start.  For me, one of those people was Ab Mikva.  When I was graduating law school, Ab encouraged me to pursue public service.  He saw something in me that I didn’t yet see in myself, but I know why he did it—Ab represented the best of public service himself and he believed in empowering the next generation of young people to shape our country.  Ab’s life was a testament to that truth.  Six decades ago, when he first tried to volunteer in Democratic politics, the Chicago political machine told him that they “don't want nobody nobody sent.”  Ab didn’t take no for an answer because he knew that in America, in our democracy, everybody can be somebody—everybody matters.

That conviction led Ab—a son of immigrants and a World War II veteran—to serve Illinois as a state legislator and serve our nation in every branch of government—as a congressman, federal judge, and White House counsel.  In every position he held, Ab’s integrity and wisdom consistently put him on the right side of history, from fighting against prejudice and discrimination and for free speech and civil liberties.  He reformed Illinois’s criminal code, defended consumers’ rights, and although his decision striking down the ban on gay Americans serving in our military was overturned, history proved him right.

Like so many admirers, I’ve lost a mentor and a friend.  But as we mourn his passing, I’m comforted by the thought that countless Americans will continue fighting for progressive causes Ab believed in because he pushed them toward public service, both during his time in government and through Mikva Challenge, which he established with his wonderful wife, Zoe.  We’re all better off because we were sent Ab Mikva, and because Ab in turn sent us forward to do big things.  Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to Zoe, their three daughters, seven grandchildren, and the generations of young patriots Ab inspired.  May his memory be for a blessing.

FBI Director Comey: Criminal Prosection 'Not Appropriate' in Hillary Clinton Email Case

FBI Director James Comey spoke to reporters about presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state. He said that although the investigation found extremely “careless” behavior by Secretary Clinton and her staff in their handling of sensitive information, the FBI concluded that no charges were appropriate and that the agency believes no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.

Cuomo Involved in Keeping a Lid on Bridgegate Scandal

Three months into the Bridgegate scandal, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was asked about it for the first time. “I don’t know anything more than basically what has been in the newspaper, because it was basically a New Jersey issue,” Cuomo said. He was talking about a disruptive traffic jam that had engulfed the bi-state agency he runs with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

But newly-released records stemming from a WNYC freedom of information request show Cuomo and his top aides responding instantly and far more intensely to the abrupt lane closures on the George Washington Bridge than had previously been known.

The records show Cuomo's right-hand man immediately applauding the reversal of the lane closures on the world's busiest bridge, frequent consultations on communications strategy between Albany and top New York appointees at the Port Authority, and Cuomo himself getting on the phone to discuss the response as the scandal got hotter.

"It was exactly what should be done," a Cuomo spokesman said about the newly-released details of the administration's response. The spokesman added that the governor's office "was asking the agency to brief them on the facts."

To be sure, there’s nothing particularly startling about a governor and his top aides frequently consulting with the leaders of a multi-billion dollar authority about a burgeoning scandal.

But the record of email and phone traffic on the New York side paints a different picture from what the two governors have led the public to believe about high-level response to the lane closures.
And it contrasts sharply with Christie's claim that he was unaware and uninterested.

Filtering Water Fears in Hoosick Falls Demands an Independent Probe

An Editorial

The 3,500 residents of upstate Hoosick Falls face the risk of illness because their water supply has been poisoned with a toxin used in manufacturing Teflon.

Known as PFOA, the chemical is believed to have seeped over a period of years into the groundwater from a manufacturing plant. Blood test results are informing a growing number of Hoosick Fallers that their bodies contain elevated levels of the substance.

With the New York Health Department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wrangling over who should have done what when, the state Assembly this spring shirked the responsibility of conducting oversight hearings. U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand then stepped into the breach by calling for a federal review.

New Yorkers, most urgently those living in the Rensselaer County village 33 miles northeast of Albany, must have a full, independent investigation, with the emphasis on independent given the potential for embarrassment to the Cuomo administration.

The Secret Black History of the Revolution

Photo illustration by Kelly Caminero/The Daily Beast

By Alan Gilbert

As we know all too well, the Revolutionary War was not fought so that all men could be free, but its role in creating the seeds of abolition should not be forgotten.

A central myth of American history teaching is that the American Revolution was fought for the “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” of each person. By each, Jefferson sadly meant mainly white farmers. This patriotic myth—what I call a Founding Amnesia—drove Frederick Douglass, in 1852, to declare that the Fourth of July was not for slaves.

But perhaps in contrast to its long history of racist exclusion, the Daughters of the American Revolution should first honor black Patriots. As Georg Daniel Flohr, a German private who fought at the decisive battle Yorktown with the French Royal Deux-Ponts for the Patriots, noted while walking around the field of battle the next day: “all over the place and wherever you looked, corpses… lying about that had not been buried; the larger part of these were Mohren [Moors, blacks].”

And as I emphasize in Black Patriots and Loyalists (2012), the acme of freedom in the American Revolution was the gradual emancipation of slaves in Vermont (not yet a state) in 1777, in Pennsylvania in 1780, in Massachusetts in 1782, in Connecticut and Rhode Island in 1784, in New York in 1799, and in New Jersey in 1804. If we ask the central question in American history: how did there come to be a free North to oppose bondage in the Civil War, the answer is, surprisingly: gradual emancipation during and just after the American Revolution. Thus, black Patriots and their white abolitionist allies played a central, undiscussed role both in battle and in the deepening of American freedom.

Finally, why did the man believed to be the first martyr of the American Revolution, Crispus Attucks, an escaped slave of black and Native American parentage who became a sailor, fiercely take on the Redcoats in the Boston Massacre? Attucks is part of a complex history that reveals how much the Revolutionary War and the Fourth of July are a day that belongs to African Americans.

NYS Senator: 'I Have Been Mostly Bedridden, Suffering and Recovering from Serious Spinal Problems'

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
By Senator Rev. Rubén Díaz
District 32 Bronx County, New York

The Ones Who Remembered Me During My Time Of Need

You should know that for the past 2 months, I have been mostly bedridden, suffering and recovering from serious spinal problems.

It is important for you to know that on Wednesday, June 1st, I was admitted to New York University Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases, where they preformed various surgeries, one through my stomach and one through my back, to remove 3 discs and insert 10 screws onto my spine.

A few days later, on June 10th, because of difficulties, I was back in the hospital where Dr. Alexander de Moura opened me up to correct further problems.

There is an old saying that goes like this:  “One knows who their friends are when they are sick or in need.”

It is important for you to know that during these past two months, I have had the opportunity to see a great number of persons, dignitaries, ministers, bishops, friends, and even people I never met, demonstrating great compassion for me, more than I could ever imagine.

We all know that anytime something very difficult like this happens to a person, it is your family and close friends who are always by your side.  For example, my wife, Leslie, has patiently taken care of me like a mother takes care of a son. My children, Damaris, Samuel and Rubencito have demonstrated their love and support for me, and so have my grandchildren, nieces, nephews.

My fellow Ministers and Bishops, my employees, and Members of the Church where I serve as Pastor have all been by my side, trying to make me feel comforted and cared for.

I am grateful to God for all of them.

But my dear reader, it is important for you to know that what I was not expecting were the dignitaries and elected officials who took time out of their busy agendas, either to come personally to visit me in the hospital, or to give me a phone call.

Among those who took time to call me on the phone were: His Eminence Cardinal Timothy Dolan; United States Senator Chuck Schumer; New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo; United States Congressman Jose Serrano; State Senators Simcha Felder, Joe Robach, Joe Griffo, Jose Peralta, Adriano Espaillat, and Martin M. Dilan; Assemblymen Michael Blake and Victor Pichardo; New York City Councilman Rafael Salamanca; Taiwan Ambassador Lily Hsu; the Former Mayor of my hometown, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Ramon Luis Rivera; and Dr. Ricardo “Ricky” Rosello, who is a Candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico.

Another official who called me was Charlie King, who I think was competing with Simcha Felder to see who would call the most. They both called me a million times!

Some officials who came personally to visit me in the hospital, aside from my son, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., were Assemblymen Marcos Crespo and Luis Sepulveda, former Senators Tom Duane and John Sampson, New York City Councilman Corey Johnson, and former New York City Transportation Commissioner Christopher Lynn.

I also received notes of sympathy from New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Senators Kevin Parker and Toby Stavisky, New York State Senate Special Assistant Celeste Knight, Mr. Ken McFadden, the Castle Hill Senior Center, and reporters such as Gerson Borrero, Kirstan Conley and Jimmy Vielkind, who took time to demonstrate their love and concern.

To all of those Pastors and Bishops who took time to visit me and pray for my health and speedy recovery, know that I will be eternally grateful.

To the hundreds of people who sent me notes, emails and Facebook postings, too many to be mentioned one by one, please know that your good wishes and prayers have helped me tremendously and soon, with God’s help, I will again be walking the streets of the 32nd Senatorial District.

I am Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz, and this is what you should know.

Poll: Clinton Leads Trump, But How Would November Look Without Him?

Hillary Clinton has a 5-point lead over Donald Trump — a slight dip from last week in her margin over the presumptive Republican nominee, according to data from our latest Weekly Election Tracking Poll. This week, Clinton enjoys 48 percent support of registered voters to Trump's 43 percent.

As the campaigns gear up for conventions later this month, there have been murmurings of a "Stop Trump" movement that would open the convention to the possibility of nominating another Republican candidate.

Though Clinton has picked up momentum against Trump in the past few weeks, the general election in November looks different when we poll other Republican candidate alternatives against Clinton in hypothetical match-ups. Voters are split when Clinton is matched up against Mitt Romney. In a match-up against House Speaker Paul Ryan or Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Clinton falls behind. These results are according to the latest from the NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll conducted online from June 27 to July 3.

'Invisible' Zika Virus Epidemic Frustrates Health Officials

Tom Frieden is frustrated.

For half a year now, he and colleagues have been trying to get Americans worried about Zika virus.

From the moment Frieden's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention realized that Zika was probably causing horrendous birth defects in Brazil, the agency has been advising pregnant women to stay away from Zika-affected zones and warning that the virus would inevitably end up in the U.S.

Yet Congress has failed for five full months to appropriate money the agency said was urgently needed back in February, and polls show Americans were more worried about Ebola — which never threatened the U.S. — than they are about Zika.

States need to start killing mosquitoes now if they are to prevent outbreaks of Zika, and experiments underway to develop new vaccines may have to end if the cash doesn't start flowing. Puerto Rico, an American territory, has a full-blown epidemic with thousands of verified cases and probably many thousands more that haven't been reported.

"The president calls the situation in Puerto Rico a crisis and it is," Frieden told NBC News.

Turkey’s Erdogan Moots Plan to Grant Citizenship to Syrians

Reuters, 05/07 14:57 CET

ISTANBUL (Reuters) – President Tayyip Erdogan outlined plans on Tuesday to grant citizenship to some of the near 3 million migrants who have fled war in neighboring Syria, particularly those with qualifications of use to Turkey.

“Western nations open their doors to such skilled individuals and they have no choice but to go (to the West) when we do not open the gates (of citizenship) ourselves. We would like to benefit from their knowledge,” Erdogan told reporters after praying at an Istanbul mosque.

Turkey struck a deal with the European Union in March to stem the flow of migrants into Europe and it has sharply cut the number of refugees and migrants reaching Greece. However, the deal has been hampered by discord over Turkish counter-terrorism law, which the EU wants brought in line with its codes.

Ankara has already said it would make it easier for migrants from Syria and other nations to get work permits and Erdogan said they could also be made Turkish citizens.

“There are highly qualified individuals among Syrian refugees in Turkey. (Granting them citizenship) would both serve Turkey’s interests and improve their living standards,” Erdogan said at the start of the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Duterte Names and Shames Top Filipino Cops for Helping Drug Gangs

Reuters, 05/07 12:38 CET

MANILA (Reuters) – Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte publicly accused five police generals of involvement in the drugs trade on Tuesday and said only he would be accountable for a bloody crackdown that has killed 30 people since he took office last week.

Duterte named the generals during a televised speech and said they were protecting drugs syndicates and contributing to a “deterioration of law and order” that he would fight to reverse, with no remorse for the consequences.

Three of the generals were retired, including one mayor, while the two serving officers were relieved of their duties, he said.

“It’s going to be a dirty fight, it’s going to be a bloody fight. I am not apologizing for it,” Duterte said.

“As public authority, mine and mine alone, I assume full legal responsibility for it.”

How the West and its Media Feed the ‘Monster’ of Jihad

Government policies, isolation, misogyny, racism, despair and denial. Jihadism is fueled by a poisonous cocktail that has been prepared for decades.

That’s the conclusion of Norwegian filmmaker and activist Deeyah Khan.

Drawing from her own experiences, as well as in depth reporting alongside those drawn to extremist causes, in Jihad: A story of the others she sets out a deep and compelling portrait of a “monster” that is threatening the world we live in.

Speaking to euronews’ Nelson Pereira, she said the hypocrisy of governments who had supported Jihadist groups when they were useful allies against communists or unwelcome powers undermined their ability to tackle the issue.

“The monster has grown,” she observes, “It has been fed, it has been armed. For very many years it was destroying only Muslims. For a very long time, these men and men like these were destroying other Muslims and Muslim societies, eating it from the inside, and nobody cared.”

She singled out two countries as particularly important in the formation of Jihadist sentiment – the UK, which serves as a center for dissemination of radical teaching in Europe – and Saudi Arabia, where many extremist doctrines were born.

“One of main sources of this cancer is Saudi Arabia, it has spread this poison in all of our countries and all of our communities and Western leaders are ready to give it a medal for countering extremism,” she notes.
She explores how young people in Western societies can feel marginalized through a lack of role models, pure racism and exclusion from opportunities.

“The other thing also that is a fundamentally underlying issue in this entire radicalizing thing is access to power. Most men or women of immigrant backgrounds do not have access to power, and cannot participate in power.”

The media plays its part, said Khan, by focusing on the terrorists and killers and ignoring those who oppose them.
