The First Lady, PBS Annnounce Winning Recipies in “Healthy Lunchtime Challenge"

Winners to Attend Kids’ "State Dinner" at the White House

Washington D.C. – First Lady Michelle Obama, PBS flagship station WGBH Boston, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced the winners of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, a nationwide recipe challenge for kids that promotes cooking and healthy eating.  Winners representing all U.S. states, four territories, and the District of Columbia will attend a Kids' “State Dinner” at the White House hosted by Mrs. Obama on July 10.  The 55 aspiring young chefs and a parent or guardian will join the First Lady for a healthy lunch, featuring a selection of the winning recipes, followed by a visit to the White House Kitchen Garden.

“Reading over these winning recipes, two things become very clear,” says First Lady Michelle Obama. “America’s kids are passionate about not just eating healthy food, but about cooking healthy food, too.  And we’re raising some truly inventive and talented chefs. I can’t wait to meet our 2015 winners and try some of their recipes at the Kids’ “State Dinner.’”

This is the fourth year of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids' "State Dinner" in which 8-12-year-old kids across the nation are invited to create a lunchtime recipe that is healthy, affordable, original, and delicious.  In support of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, entrants were encouraged to reference information at ChooseMyPlate.gov to ensure recipes met the USDA’s recommended nutrition guidance. The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge received almost one thousand entries featuring wholesome, tasty ingredients, such as salmon, chickpeas, cauliflower, and quinoa. Entries had to represent each of the food groups, either in one dish or as parts of a lunch meal, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. To make the challenge possible for kids and their families across America, support is being provided to WGBH by Newman’s Own® and Newman’s Own Foundation.

“We are extraordinarily impressed with the quality and the creativity of the recipes that were submitted. It’s a wonderful testament to what kids who are inspired and empowered can accomplish when given the chance,” said Brigid Sullivan, WGBH Vice President for Children’s Media and Educational Programming. “We are especially grateful to Newman’s Own for their deep commitment to improving the health of our children and for providing support to make this opportunity possible.”

"Healthy eating is an important factor in a student’s ability to learn and achieve academically," said Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education. “These young students harnessed their creativity to come up with fresh, new recipes that are nutritious, affordable and appealing to kids. This competition is just another example of how kids can be inspired to meet challenges—whether inside or outside the classroom.”

“It is critical that our next generation learns healthy eating habits at school and at home,” said Tom Vilsack, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. “These young people have demonstrated creativity in the kitchen, while keeping an eye on MyPlate’s recommendations for a nutritious, balanced diet.  The First Lady’s challenge is helping them hone skills that will serve them well into adulthood.”

The winners were chosen by a panel of judges that included: Debra Eschmeyer, Executive Director of Let’s Move!; Michel Nischan, renowned chef and President & CEO of the Wholesome Wave Foundation; Jackie Haven MS, RD Deputy Director, USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion; Shelley Maniscalco, MPH, RD, Director, CNPP Office of Nutrition Marketing and Communications; Sam Myers, Director, White House Liaison, U.S. Department of Education; Kristina Spencer, Office of the General Counsel, U.S. Department of Education; Tanya Steel, a children's healthy eating expert who has been involved with each Healthy Lunchtime Challenge; former winners of the contest, and recent graduates of Share our Strength’s Cooking Matters program for children.

Time to Exercise Our Power: A Public Plea from Renowned Author Robert Caro

"NYC libraries deserve more funding. With the budget process ending soon, we’re running out time to make it happen."

Dear Friend,

Think of all the books that were written in the library. Or even better, all the books that live there. There are few places more perfect, or more important, than a public library.

Today, I want to ask you to join me in doing something with the collective power of the millions of us in the NYPL community: make things better for New York City by asking our Mayor and City Council to invest in our struggling libraries.

With the budget process ending soon, we’re frankly running out of time. Today, I joined with Oliver Sacks, David Byrne, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and dozens more to sign a full page New York Times ad that asks our City's leaders to invest in libraries. Will you join us?

Since 2008, NYC’s libraries have lost 20% of their funding, as well as a thousand staff. At the same time, demand for books, programs, and classes has increased significantly.

When I was writing The Power Broker, I did much of my research at The New York Public Library. It was wonderful to have those materials at my desk, and the materials were wonderful too. It seemed like everything in the world could be found at that beautiful building on Fifth Avenue.

What’s even more important is that anyone who wants to come to the library is welcome there. All New Yorkers can go to the library read, find jobs, study, and pursue their own passions.

Libraries shouldn’t have to struggle. Neither should those who depend on them most. It’s really that simple.

Don’t let NYC leaders overlook libraries. Tell them right now to invest in libraries–for our kids, for ourselves, and for our entire city.

The services that libraries give the community are so important. Thanks for joining me.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Caro

A new Government Accountability Office report found that the Transportation Security Administration failed to identify 73 employees with active clearance badges who were on terror watch lists.

The people, who were employed by major airlines, airport vendors and other employers, were not identified because TSA is not authorized to receive all terrorism-related information under current inter-agency policies, the report said.

Escaped Murderers Sweat and Matt Remain on Run for Third Day

Cops and canines painstakingly searched early Monday for any sign of two escaped murderers whose brazen prison breakout triggered an around-the-clock manhunt and unusual reward offer.

As the hunt for Richard Matt and David Sweat entered a third day, questions swirled over how the duo managed their daring Hollywood-style escape. Officials pledged they would not rest until the two were back behind bars.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo — who has called the escape a "crisis situation" for his state — said the killers "definitely had help" breaking out.

"We're looking at everything, primarily from the inside," he told NBC's TODAY. "They definitely had help, otherwise, they couldn't have done this on their own, even from the equipment point of view."

U.S. Top Court Invalidates Jerusalem Passport Law

By Lawrence Hurley

WASHINGTON
(Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday struck down a law that would allow American citizens born in Jerusalem to have Israel listed as their birthplace on passports, handing a victory to President Barack Obama’s administration.

The Obama administration argued that the law unlawfully encroached on the president’s power to set foreign policy and would have, if enforced, undermine the U.S. government’s claim to be a neutral peacemaker in the Middle East.

“Congress cannot command the president to contradict an earlier recognition determination in the issuance of passports,” Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative who often casts the deciding vote in close cases, wrote in the majority opinion.

The court was divided, with the court’s four liberal members joining Kennedy in the majority. One of the court’s conservatives, Justice Clarence Thomas, agreed with part of the ruling. The court’s other conservatives, Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Samuel Alito, all dissented.

Congress passed the law in 2002 when President George W. Bush was president, but neither his administration nor the current Obama administration ever enforced it.

G7 Says Concerned About Tensions in the East and South China Seas

KRUEN, Germany (Reuters) – The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations said on Monday they were concerned about tensions in the East and South China Seas and called for countries to abide by international law.

“We underline the importance of peaceful dispute settlement as well as free and unimpeded lawful use of the world’s oceans,” they said in a communique.

China claims most of the South China Sea, while the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also have overlapping claims.

“We strongly oppose the use of intimidation, coercion or force, as well as any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo, such as large-scale land reclamation,” the G7 leaders said, without naming countries.

China has been criticised for extensive reclamation work and moves to turn submerged rocks into man-made structures.

History Becomes a Weapon in Russia-West Rift over Ukraine

By Jason Bush

MOSCOW (Reuters) – History has become a weapon in Russia’s battle with the West over Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin looks increasingly to the past to whip up patriotism and rally support.

Last month’s lavish commemorations of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two, several declarations by Putin and new history textbooks have all presented what some independent historians say are slanted or rewritten versions of the past.

The Nazi-Soviet pact that divided Poland in 1939 – which saw Moscow seize much of what is now Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States – is now seen in a positive light. A new justification has been found for the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 and some of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s worst crimes have been played down.

“It is an aggressive stance in the debate over history,” said Alexei Miller, a history Professor at European University in St Petersburg, who says all sides have been distorting the past during the conflict. “History is a victim of the current crisis in relations between Russia and Europe.”

He says “wars of memory” are being waged with the West and ex-Soviet neighbours such as the Baltic states and Ukraine, where history is increasingly being interpreted in different ways to suit political views.

Putin, who denies Western accusations of sending troops and weapons to pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, has made clear that he understands the power of history.

This is perhaps not surprising for a man brought up in the Soviet Union, where history was vetted to glorify Communism, denigrate the West and denounce “enemies of the people”.

G7 Leaders Discuss Ukraine, Climate Change and the Threat from Radical Extremism

The first working day of the G7 summit in Germany has led to some financial pledges and firm commitments.
Climate change and the threat posed by radical extremism were discussed by the leaders of the US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, Japan and Italy.

Host Chancellor Angela Merkel added that the sanctions laid against Russia over the situation in Ukraine will stay in place until the Minsk accords are fully implemented and respected:

“We say that the conflict in Southeast Ukraine can be resolved only politically and on the basis of the Minsk agreement. We agree that the lifting of the sanctions is linked to the implementation of Minsk and we are ready – if necessary – to reinforce the sanctions eventually.” she told reporters.

Leaders agreed that a common approach is needed to reduce the dependance on fossil fuels and limit greenhouse gas emissions.

They also agreed that a joint approach is needed to stem the threat of radical extremism from organisations like Boko Haram and the group calling itself Islamic State.

Search for 'Dangerous' New York State Prison Escapees Enters Second Day

More than 250 officers from numerous law enforcement agencies were monitoring checkpoints and searching mountainous upstate New York terrain Sunday in hopes of catching two convicted murderers who executed an elaborate escape from a maximum security prison the day before.

The stunning breakout was the first for the maximum security portion of Clinton Correctional Facility since the Dannemora, New York, prison opened 150 years ago.

Richard Matt, 48, who killed and dismembered his boss in 1997, and David Sweat, 34, who killed a sheriff's deputy in 2002, used power tools to gain access to catwalks, then a series of pipes and tunnels, which led to a manhole a block away from the prison, according to authorities.
