Obama Approves Additional $105 Million for Horn of Africa Famine

Amid the worst drought in East Africa in 60 years, the United Nations has declared that famine now affects five regions in Somalia and predicts that famine could soon expand throughout southern Somalia. Thousands of Somalis are fleeing the famine and seeking refuge in Kenya and Ethiopia, which are also affected by the drought. According to the United Nations, more than 12.4 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Today, on behalf of the U.S. Government and the American people, the President has approved an additional $105 million for urgent humanitarian relief efforts in the Horn of Africa, including funds from his Emergency Relief and Migration Assistance Fund. This year alone, the U.S. has provided approximately $565 million in humanitarian assistance. U.S. assistance will continue funding the urgently needed food, health, shelter, water and sanitation assistance to those who desperately need help.

NYRA's Telebet Operations Return!

"I am pleased that we were able to bring these jobs back to New York," said Governor Andrew Cuomo.
NYRA had closed its center in New York City and contracted with CDTIC but the work was to be done in Oregon. Empire State Development (ESD) helped CDTIC to identify options for keeping these jobs within the state but no state incentives are involved.
"Helping New York businesses keep their jobs in New York is essential to our economic recovery. By creating employment and investment opportunities in New York, we are able to strengthen the local community and stimulate job growth. Under Governor Cuomo's vision for a new New York, we will continue to harness local assets like NYRA to promote economic activity," said Kenneth Adams, President & CEO of Empire State Development.
Charles Hayward, President & CEO of NYRA, stated, "We were pleased to work with Empire State Development to help CDTIC find a New York location for our telebet operations."
John D. Sabini, Chairman of the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, also praised the decision.
"This is a winning solution for taxpayers, the racing industry and the countless dedicated workers who keep world-class racing thriving in the Empire State. Governor Cuomo's commitment to putting New Yorkers back to work is exemplified with this result, and as the regulatory body that oversees NYRA, it was paramount to the Racing and Wagering Board that these jobs remain in New York State. I applaud Governor Cuomo, ESD and NYRA for working together to reach this conclusion."
"I'm pleased that these jobs are returning to New York State. Western New York boasts a tremendous workforce that will be able to support CDTIC's needs as it moves forward at its new location in Amherst," noted Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer.
Assemblyman Jim Hayes said, "Jobs continue to be a top priority for our community. I want to thank NYRA for identifying and choosing Amherst as the location for its telephone betting services, which will bring much-needed jobs and investment to the region."
NYRA has seen dramatic increases in its telephone and Internet account wagering business since New York City OTB closed in December 2010. When the telebet operations were moved to Oregon, no union pari-mutuel teller jobs were lost.
NYRA operates thoroughbred racing at Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park in Queens, Belmont Park in Elmont on Long Island, and Saratoga Race Course north of Albany in Saratoga Springs. NYRA tracks are the cornerstone of the state's thoroughbred business, which contributes more than $2 billion annually to New York State's urban, suburban and rural economy.
In 2010, more than 1.6 million people attended the live races at NYRA tracks. NYRA's websites include www.nyra.com, www.belmontstakes.com, and www.nyragroupsales.com. You can also follow NYRA on social media platforms like Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and YouTube.

'Today Marks the 13th Anniversary of al-Qai'da's Terrorist Attacks'

Today marks the thirteenth Anniversary of al-Qa`ida’s terrorist attacks against the U.S. Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The United States joins with the people and government of Kenya, where 218 people lost their lives and over 5,000 were injured; and Tanzania, where the attack killed 11 people and wounded at least 85 others to remember and reflect on those who were injured and the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
These attacks in East Africa stand as testament to al-Qa`ida’s commitment to use unspeakable violence to kill innocent men, women and children regardless of their religion, race, or nationality. The death of Harun Fazul, the architect of these terrible acts, on June 11, 2011, was an important blow to al-Qa’ida and its ability to threaten so many innocents around the region.
Today, the remembrance of these tragic attacks spurs us to continue to work closely with our allies in East Africa and around the world to bring terrorists to justice and to redouble our efforts to prevent these attacks in the future.
We join with our friends and allies in advancing peace and security for Americans, Kenyans, Tanzanians, and all people in building a world that is worthy of the legacy of the victims of these bombings. And as we extend our hearts and prayers to the families of those killed, we pledge that they will not be forgotten.

'Fearless' Queens Seniors Fighting Back!

Co-sponsor and Fearless Fighting Females founder Evon Reyes demonstrated techniques to fight off an attacker before dozens of older adults who took her one-hour class at the Middle Village Senior Center, 69-10 75th Street; 718-894-3441.
Senator Addabbo notes, “Most of my district’s senior centers are predominantly attended by women. When I met Evon Reyes and she described her self-defense classes, which specialize in personal development and assertiveness training for women of diverse ages, I knew my seniors would welcome the idea. Evon’s training methods have produced positive results in the lives of her students who don’t want to become tomorrow’s crime statistics. We’re hoping many men at the centers will also fearlessly join the classes."
Fearless Fighting Females was founded in 2010 focused on two goals: to empower women by reminding them of what powerful and spectacular creatures they are; and to reaffirm what all women should already know -- that no obstacle or challenge can stop them from dreaming or making their dreams come true.
According to Reyes, “Fearless Fighting Females is for all of us who fight to overcome our deepest fears so that we may conquer the challenges of tomorrow."
Reyes has volunteered her time to local organizations and within her community by offering free one-hour self-defense workshops with WET Production Risk Takers Program, Girl Scouts of America, and the York College Women’s Center.
If you'd like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview with Evon Reyes, please call her at 347-351-6782 or e-mail Fearlessff.info@gmail.com.
