Yes, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman
picked an appropriate word to describe the state’s voting system. But
we can think of a few others. How about “arcane” or “abysmal” or
“backward” or “bewildering”?
Sadly, all fit. That’s because New
York refuses to step into the modern era. That’s because the state has
backed some of the worst ideas about voting. And that’s because the
state had done these things, even though it is consistently near the
bottom in terms of voter turnout.
Schneiderman pointed to a record
number of complaints during the state’s presidential primary in April,
saying voters were upset New York doesn’t allow people to register and
vote on the same day and doesn’t let voters easily change parties.
Instead, the state laws are incredibly rigid.
