I note with great sadness and alarm that a band of Nazi thugs has
announced plans to hold an “armed protest” this month with the explicit
goal of harassing and intimidating the Jewish community of Whitefish,
Mont.
On a hate website called the Daily Stormer, the site’s owner, Andrew
Anglin, recently boasted that “we can easily march through the center of
the town carrying high-powered rifles.” He also writes that “my guys
say we are going to be able to put together about 200 people to
participate in the march, which will be against Jews, Jewish businesses
and everyone who supports either. We will be busing in skinheads from
the Bay Area.”
Whitefish, a ski-resort town, is the part-time home of Richard Spencer,
a far-right agitator. Spencer is the one who drew headlines by toasting
the election of Donald Trump at a public building in Washington, D.C.,
as supporters shouted “Hail Trump!” with arms outstretched in a Nazi salute.
Spencer listed the address of his parents’ home in Whitefish as the
primary office of his white supremacist group, the National Policy
Institute. That led to protests by anti-hate groups in Whitefish — and,
in turn, to Anglin’s campaign to strike back.
