Trump, Clinton Rack Up Early Wins in East Coast Primaries

Donald Trump will sweep all five Republican primary contests held Tuesday, NBC News projects, racking up significant wins in Delaware, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has also notched wins in Delaware and Maryland, NBC News projects. The Democratic races in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania remain too early to call, and the race in  Connecticut is too close to call.

The victories for Trump are sure to translate into big delegate hauls that will move him closer to clinching his party's nomination. Rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich have hoped to rob Trump of as many delegates as possible by notching strong performances in favorable pockets of each state.

The fight for the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination will be heavily focused on Pennsylvania, where 54 delegates will be elected directly on the ballot. These "unbound" Republican delegates will not be bound to support any candidate at the July GOP convention, and each GOP campaign will heavily court them for commitments of support.
