Governor Cuomo on Amazon Pull Out: 'The New York State Senate Has Done Tremendous Damage'
"Amazon chose to come to New York because we are the capital of the world and the best place to do business. We competed in and won the most hotly contested national economic development competition in the United States, resulting in at least 25,000-40,000 good paying jobs for our state and nearly $30 billion dollars in new revenue to fund transit improvements, new housing, schools and countless other quality of life improvements. Bringing Amazon to New York diversified our economy away from real estate and Wall Street, further cementing our status as an emerging center for tech and was an extraordinary economic win not just for Queens and New York City, but for the entire region, from Long Island to Albany's nanotech center.
"However, a small group politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community -- which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City -- the state's economic future and the best interests of the people of this state. The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity.
"The fundamentals of New York's business climate and community that attracted amazon to be here - our talent pool, world-class education system, commitment to diversity and progressivism - remain and we won't be deterred as we continue to attract world class business to communities across New York State."

J.P. Morgan Chase Becomes First U.S. Bank With a Cryptocurrency
By Erik Sherman
How the mighty have taken a u-turn.
J.P. Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon called bitcoin a fraud
in September 2017 and said, “You can’t have a business where people can
invent a currency out of thin air and think that people who are buying
it are really smart,” By January 2018 he had walked the remarks back but said he still was “not interested that much in the subject at all.” In February 2018, J.P. Morgan called cryptocurrencies “risk factors” to its business, something it never previously said.
And now J.P. Morgan (jpm, -0.50%) has become the first bank to offer its own cryptocurrency,
CNBC reported. But don’t expect it to become an investment vehicle—at
least for now. The cryptocurrency, called “JPM Coin,” is intended for
the bank’s wholesale payments business that moves $6 trillion around the
world daily.

Rep. Ilhan Omar Went After Elliott Abrams for Lying to Congress. Then He Did It Again.
By Jon Schwarz
Elliott Abrams, President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Venezuela, appeared before the House Committee on Foreign Relations on Wednesday.
About two hours into the hearing, committee member Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., noted that Abrams pleaded guilty in 1991 to withholding information about the Iran-Contra affair from Congress. “I fail to understand,” Omar said, “why members of this committee or the American people should find any testimony that you give today to be truthful.”
Omar’s skepticism was well-founded: Just moments later, Abrams told her several egregious lies.
Abrams’s most notable lies occurred during this exchange about his actions as assistant secretary of state in the 1980s during the Reagan administration:

Omar’s skepticism was well-founded: Just moments later, Abrams told her several egregious lies.
Abrams’s most notable lies occurred during this exchange about his actions as assistant secretary of state in the 1980s during the Reagan administration:
OMAR: On February 8, 1982, you testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about U.S. policy in El Salvador. In that hearing, you dismissed as communist propaganda reports about the massacre at El Mozote in which more than 800 civilians, including children as young as 2 years old, were brutally murdered by U.S.-trained troops. During that massacre, some of those troops bragged about raping a 12-year-old girl, girls, before they killed them. You later said that the U.S. policy in El Salvador was a “fabulous achievement.” Yes or no, do you still think so?
ABRAMS: From the day that President Duarte was elected in a free election, to this day, El Salvador has been a democracy. That’s a fabulous achievement.Abrams’s words were “not only factually, demonstrably untrue, but grossly so,” according to Alejandro Velasco, a professor of modern Latin American history at New York University. His testimony, said Velasco, “continues a pattern he has shown since the 1980s of hubristically rejecting out of hand any suggestion that defeating social justice struggles in the 1980s, through the most brutal means, should in any way be seen as anything other than a resounding victory for the U.S.”

Five Ways to Guard Against Identity Theft this Tax Season
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today shared important tips to help New York taxpayers guard against identity theft and prevent related tax fraud.
Scam artists are continually altering their tactics to steal sensitive information used in their fraud schemes.
“While the Tax Department constantly adjusts its analytics-driven processing systems to stop schemes as they emerge, it’s vital that taxpayers take precautions to protect the personal information these criminals rely on,” said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “These tips can help you avoid being victimized by identity thieves.”
Tips to prevent identity theft and fraud
File promptly. Filing your tax return as soon as possible can reduce the likelihood that an identity thief will be able to claim a fraudulent tax refund using your stolen information.
Protect data and documents used to prepare your return. Keep sensitive personal information and documents safe during and after the filing process, and delete or shred once no longer needed.
If you hire a tax preparer, do your research to ensure they’re competent and ethical. Avoid preparers who boast that they can obtain refunds larger than their competitors can, who don’t provide you with their IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), or who base their fee on a percentage of your refund.
Make sure your tax preparer is willing to sign your return. The preparer must also provide you with a copy of your return.
Carefully review your return. You’re responsible for the return’s accuracy. If you hire a paid preparer, never sign a blank return.
Report it
If you are a victim, or believe you may be a potential victim of tax-related identity theft, alert us immediately. We will track your information to help keep it private and protected. Visit the Tax Department’s Report fraud, scams, and identity theft webpage.

EANY: Trump's EPA Drops the Ball on PFOA, PFOS in Drinking Water
Today the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made an announcement regarding the toxic chemicals PFOA and PFOS. Maureen Cunningham, Senior Director for Clean Water for Environmental Advocates of New York (EANY), issued the following statement on the EPA decision.
“Today, EPA could have protected people’s health by announcing a plan to
strongly and swiftly regulate PFOA and PFOS. Instead, they chose a path
that will lead to years of bureaucratic red tape, leaving our most
vulnerable populations exposed to these dangerous chemicals. Sadly, New
York has a tragic history with these chemicals contaminating drinking
water supplies in places like Hoosick Falls, Suffolk County, and
Newburgh. EPA has dropped the ball -- New York must now pick it up and
run with it. Governor Cuomo and the New York State Department of Health
should take notice and immediately regulate these chemicals in drinking
water.”

Albany and Madison County Achieve State Emergency Management Accreditation
Albany
and Madison Counties have achieved accreditation as part of the Local
Emergency Management Accreditation Program. First proposed in the
Governor's 2017 State of the State, the accreditation program is the
first of its kind at the state-level for local emergency management
agencies in the nation. Albany and Madison Counties join New York City
and Broome, Livingston, Montgomery, and Oneida Counties as those that
have achieved state accreditation.
"The
safety of New Yorkers is our number one priority, and this
first-in-the-nation program ensures local emergency management offices
can efficiently respond to any disaster and protect the public,"
Governor Cuomo said. "By putting procedures in place to respond to
unpredictable emergency situations, we are creating a stronger, safer
and more secure New York."
The
program, developed in partnership with the New York State Emergency
Management Association (NYSEMA), is designed to highlight and promote
proactive local emergency management agencies in New York State. To
become accredited, the locality must meet a series of standards and best
practices that promote a coordinated and integrated approach to
emergency management. The localities must engage "Whole Community"
stakeholders, including government and private partners, and consider
the needs of those that may require specific attention during an
emergency or disaster, like the homeless, elderly, or disabled. The
Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) administers
the program on behalf of the Local Emergency Management Accreditation
Council, which serves as the governing body for the program.
Accreditation is valid for five years, with an opportunity to obtain
reaccreditation after the five-year period.

Ann Coulter's Wall and Trump's Continuing Drive Towards Fascism
By Steven Jonas
The history of "Trump's Wall" is well known. Big item on the campaign
trail. Big rouser of crowds. Big focus of back-and-forths from
History's
Greatest Con Man. And of course,
really big focus, big back-and-forth, with the punch line: "Who is going
to pay
for the Wall? Mexico" (which could have
been followed by a rhyming "ho, ho, ho," but the crowd might have really
believed
it and Trump-the-Con-or in this case might actually have believed it
too). Of course, when he was turned down
immediately by even the right-of-center Mexican President Pena Nieto, he
came
up with an idea that would have been criminal under international law,
that is
sequestering remittances of private persons to pay for a U.S. government
project.
But Trump stayed with The Wall as a prime crowd-booster
at his, some might say, fascist-style
rallies, after he became President.
But, in terms of the reality of a Wall-from-sea-to-shining-sea, as has
been pointed out by many observers, nothing happened during the two years that
the Repubs. controlled the Congress as well as the Presidency. Now one might say "filibuster rule" in the
Senate but wily ol' Mitch McConnell might have found a work-around for that
one, if he had really wanted to. But he
didn't and it's likely that he didn't even want to try.
For The Wall has been becoming less-and-less popular politically over time, outside of "Trump's base." It has also been becoming less popular for practical reasons, such as: many places on the border where a wall could not be built, physically; many places on the border, especially along the Rio Grande, where property owners, many of them usually staunch Repubs., would fight as hard as they could against giving up their property, and their views, for it; the cost, which could get up into the $70 billion range. And so on and so forth.

'Empire' Star Says Black Communities Aren't Getting the Mental Health Care They Need
An Op-Ed by Taraji P. Henson
People in the African-American community have long been afraid to talk about our mental health; we just don't do it. We're told to pray it away, we're told to be strong, we're told it's a sign of weakness or, a lot of times, mental health issues comes off as "rage" and is dismissed or ignored. There’s shame and taboo around the topic.
We have to break that silence.
What
made me comfortable with talking about it was that my father had issues
with mental illness, and he was very vocal about it. So I never thought
there was something "wrong" with either having mental health challenges
or talking about it. But then, when I grew up and had my own hardships —
my own traumas — and it was time to deal with them head on, there was
an issue: I couldn't easily find a therapist who really understood my
challenges as an African-American.
