Here is an expanded version of the second item of my "Albany Insider" column from Monday's print editions:
Last week was not a good one for state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s corruption-busting efforts.
A felony case he brought against state Sen. Robert Ortt (R-Niagara County) was dismissed by an Albany judge who found there wasn't enough evidence to warrant the grand jury indictment that he violated state election law.
Schneiderman had accused Ortt of not reporting in his state campaign financial disclosure forms $21,500 in payments local Republicans made ot his wife.
Meanwhile, a different judge threw out key evidence in a case against former Erie County Democratic Chairman Steve Pigeon, though the case alleging he tried to bribe a judge is proceeding. The judge ruled Schneiderman's office can not use emails obtained through a raid of Pigeon's home and office because investigators waited too long to execute the warrants.
