Senate Judiciary Chair Lindsey Graham (R-SC) unveiled legislation to
address the rising number of immigrants seeking asylum at the Southern
Border. In a news conference, he said the bill would do four things:
require asylum requests in country of origin or Mexico; send back
unaccompanied minors from Central America; detain families together for
100 days; and hire 500 new immigration judges. Graham responded to
questions from reporters about the politics of immigration, saying
Democrats and Republicans must work together to address it. He was
joined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Chief Operating Officer
John Sanders, who reported that border agents have apprehended 520,000
immigrants so far in the 2019 fiscal year. In the previous seven days,
he said they had 4500 arrests per day.
