New York Congressional Leaders Express Concern Over Rise in Hate Crimes in Letter to NYPD

A recent rise in bias crimes in the city has drawn the attention of lawmakers in Washington.

Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) and other Democrats are sending a letter to NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill on Monday asking questions about the increase in anti-Semitic crimes across the city and offering help to the city's nascent Hate Crimes Task Force.

Targeted attacks on Jews — including "Kill all Jews" and other messages scrawled in a Brooklyn synagogue, a 9-year-old Hasidic boy being sucker-punched by a stranger and swastikas being spray-painted on the office wall of a Holocaust scholar at Columbia Teacher's College — led the collection of politicos to reach out to the city's top cop.
