Bill Duke’s memoir is a Hollywood success
story. The tale of a young black boy born into deep segregation, hate
and racism who is able to rise above to attain and sustain a robust
career in the entertainment industry. Yet with this success there is
still a sense of emptiness and unfinished business.
Hollywood
was not accustomed to seeing black men in leadership positions. Duke was one of the first black men directing, acting and producing. He
followed in the footsteps of Michael Schultz, Gordon Parks, Sidney
Portier, and others -- but it was not an easy journey.
