The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) recently spoke with two researchers in the United Kingdom who have
been studying the relationship between hate speech and hate crime. They
concluded that hate crimes against Muslims and Latinos occurred shortly
after President Trump made disparaging tweets about those groups. Words
matter, and when political leaders use bigoted rhetoric, the
consequences can be particularly harmful to the groups targeted.
